After a few years of misses, Acura seems to have gotten it right with the 2018 Acura TLX. The new model looks as premium as they come with a sporty look and a complimenting cabin. The model was unveiled recently at the concluded New York Auto Show. The model, however, retains the drive-train setup of the outgoing model.
2018 Acura TLX Exterior
The exterior look of the 2018 TLX has been revised for a more modern look. The base model flaunts a new “diamond pentagon-shaped” signature grille. Its LED headlights now integrate LED turn signals. The front also has a revised front bumper and a new hood with sharper edges. There are also new front fenders and it rides on a set of 17-inch aluminum wheels.
The TLX V6 adds a new bumper design that looks more aggressive, rectangular-shaped exhaust tips and a thinner rear diffuser panel. The model rides on 18-inch aluminum wheels. The TLX V6 A-Spec features aggressive fascias (both front and rear). The fog lights have adopted a round shape instead of the trapezoid shape in the outgoing model. The exhaust tips, on the other hand, have a rectangular shape instead of the outgoing model’s round shape. It also has a rear decklid spoiler. The model rolls on a set of 19-inch aluminum wheels.
An advanced package that adds LED fog lights, surround-view camera system, power-folding side mirrors and a body-color rear spoiler is optional.
Acura has retained the model’s dual-screen infotainment system but has revised it for easier operation and fast response. Overall, the system is more intuitive. It also features as standard, Smartphone projection that supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other new include new seats wrapped in leather and feature contrast stitching and piping. The model also features chrome door sill plates and a power bolster for the thighs. These features are available in the new Technology package.
More features are offered in the Advance package. It features LED ambient cabin lighting, LED fog lights, a wireless charging pad, surround-view-camera, heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats as well as heated rear seats.
The TLX A-Spec adds exclusive seats with extra bolstering, a sport steering wheel and red highlights for instruments. Overall, the interior has a”brushed aluminum look”. The standard upholstery material is leather with Alcantara inserts for the seats and door panels. Buyers will choose between red and black trims for the seats. Ventilated front seats, wireless charging as well as ambient interior lighting are standard.
All TLX models come with the AcuraWatch suite that packs a host of driver-assist features including automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning that features lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control and road-departure mitigation. Blind spot warning is optional for the base TLX trim and the TLX V6 trim but standard on the TLX A-Spec.
Engine and performance
The 2018 Acura TLX carried over with the same engines as the current model. The base engine is a 2.4 L, 4-cylinder engine. The engine produces 206 hp. It is paired to an 8-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission system that has paddle shifters. Power is sent to the front wheels as standard while the automaker’s Precision AWD (P-AWS) system is optional. Buyers looking for more power can opt for a 3.5 L, V-6 that is capable of 290 hp. This engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. AWD models are still equipped with the P-AWS system.
Buyers can also opt for the fully dedicated Super Handling AWD (SH-AWD) system. This system can channel the majority of power to one rear wheel. The A-Spec adds a sport-tuned suspension and a revised steering wheel that offers a sharper and a more precise response.
Price and release date
Acura has not announced the prices for the 2018 TLX. Considering the new upgrades, the model will definitely attract slightly higher prices. Sales commence in the second half of 2017.
