Tesla took the electric vehicle s industry by storm such that every electric car nowadays is dubbed a Tesla rival. However much they try, many of the new electric cars come short of the Tesla standards. However, Ashton Martin wants to go beyond that with a new sedan powered entirely by batteries.
The company launched an all-electric version of the Aston Martin Rapide S that can be termed as a real and direct competitor to the Tesla Model S. Rumors had been running for several months about the possibility of Aston Martin developing an all-electric sedan.
The automobile was unveiled outside Lancaster House during a meeting between the President of China and members of the British Royal family. The setting was carefully planned since the RapidE project is financed by China Equity and its first models are also targeted for the Chinese market.
2017 Aston Martin RapidE Exterior
In all aspects, except for a few tweaks, the RapidE is identical to the V-12 powered gasoline sister Rapide S. We believe that is a good thing since the Rapide S is one of the most stylish 4-door sedan in the market currently. The look surely beats Tesla’s model S, the latter looks lackluster.
The only changes on the 2017 Aston Martin RapidE compared to the Rapide S are its blue dotted decals on its doors, hood and the roof. The RapidE also features a RapidE badge on the trunk lid with a blue “E”. Other differences include Williams Advanced Engineering lettering on its front fenders, mirrors, carbon caps and on its 10-spoke wheels.
2017 Aston Martin RapidE Interior
The British automaker remained tightlipped about the RapidE’s interior during the launch. However, we believe the vehicle will borrow much from the Rapide S. Our engineers believe that the vehicle will likely feature a bespoke instruments cluster.
This they argue is required to display essential drive-train information like range and battery status. The center console will also get a redesign. The vehicle might also feature new upholstery options and a new entertainment system not forgetting enhanced safety features and driving aids.
Engine Specs and Performance
Powering the 2017 Aston Martin RapidE will be two electric drive-train options. The engines have been developed jointly with the Williams Advanced Engineering which is a subsidiary of the Williams Grand Prix Engineering Ltd. This company has excelled in adapting technology originally meant for Formula One cars to road-going vehicles. There will be a base model which will produce similar power as the Rapid S. The output will be around 550 hp and the power will be sent to rear wheels. This model will have a range of around 320 km (200 miles).
The second unit will be a high performance version with a power output of over 800 hp and according to Aston Martin’s CEO Andy Palmer; the output could well reach the 1000 mark. This power comes from 4 electric motors. The version will be a four wheel drive and each of the four motors will drive one wheel. The wheels are mounted along the vehicle’s spine to help keep its weight distribution and center of gravity favorable. The vehicle will also feature regenerative braking and torque vectoring.
Price and release date
It is way too early for the automaker to avail details on its price or expected release date. However, rumor has it that the vehicle will attract a price tag in the region of $ 250,000. The vehicle will most likely hit the showrooms in the first half of 2017. The base model will be availed first with the high performance option following later on.
Andy Palmer emphasized that their company is a V-12 company and they are not considering going the way other manufacturers are going. Rather than downsize their engines, the company will utilize electric energy to continue producing luxurious vehicles with huge power. He further explained that they are not targeting to compete with Tesla’s models but rather to set new standards in the Electric motoring industry.
