2018 Aston Martin AM-RB 001

What do you get from a partnership of Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing Formula One team? Simple, you get the most stylish and fastest road-legal car in the world. Earlier this month, Aston Martin released photos of this upcoming beast and it just looks intimidating with its highly aerodynamic stance. The beast is christened 2018 Aston Martin AM-RB 001.

In addition to the road-going version, there will be a track-only variant which Andy Palmer, CEO of Aston Martin claims will be as quick if not quicker than an F1 racer. All this is courtesy of the experience and technical expertise in design and engineering which Andrian Newey, Red Bull’s Chief Technical Officer brings to the table.  Read along for more:

One look at the 2018 Aston Martin AM-RB 001 and you are likely to mistake it for a screenshot from a video game due to its futuristic looks. The design is highly aerodynamic, a prerequisite in the bid to make the model the fastest street-legal car in this planet. Carbon-fiber is used unsparingly on the structure and body panels. Its down-force is generated via under-floor aerodynamics. This also created room for Mark Reichman, Aston’s design chief to create a stylish design that is easily recognizable as an Aston Martin.

The model features a short nose, very short overhangs and a long rear deck. Its wheel arches are very muscular while its canopy-like roof stretches over the engine. Though you might not realize it, the model’s chassis is based on an open-wheel design similar to the one used on F1 cars.

At the rear, the AM-RB 001 features a tunnel-like part which channels air that gets in from the nose. The rear also features a thin wing and a low-slung rear section of the roof which illustrates the extent of the model’s complex aerodynamics. The hypercar is believed to be 80% production ready meaning an official public debut is not that far away.

I am amazed to learn that the vehicle has a passenger cabin. In fact, the automaker claims that the passenger compartment can actually fit two grown up adults but I think a single passenger will struggle to fit in there.

However, Newer said that they in fact had a test buck where he and Andy sat next to each other in the passenger compartment despite Newer’s tall body and Andy’s stout proportions. According to Aston Martin, it was important for the model to have a passenger compartment.

Further, Newer revealed that the model will feature electronic driver-assist technologies like stability and traction control but the technologies will be switchable in case the driver wants to be more engaged when driving the car. It will also feature active aerodynamics which varies to increase speed.

Being the fastest car in the world is not Aston’s sole goal in this project; rather, the automaker aims to also offer an impressive driving experience unlike the Bugatti Chiron which does not offer an engaging driving experience.

Engine and performance

Aston Martin and the Red Bull Formula One Racing Team are keeping engine details under wraps.  However, rumor is rife that a naturally aspirated V-12 engine will be used. This is a bit surprising considering the industry is edging to turbocharged mills.

The engine will be mounted behind the seats, and helps achieve the 1:1 power-to-weight ratio; this ratio is measured in horsepower per kg. The mill will be paired with a race-spec transmission system. The powerful engine will help the model achieve a 0-60 mph run in less than 3 seconds.

Price and release date

Price is still a mystery as of this writing. However, rumor has it that the model will attract over £ 1 million. Aston Martin is yet to confirm the actual number of units that will be produced only saying the number will range between 99 and 150 inclusive of 25 track-dedicated versions. The models will be delivered to buyers from 2018.

The only other supercar with a 1:1 power-weight ratio is the Koenigsegg One:1 which is out of production; nonetheless, it is the only AM-RB 001 worthy rival in this aspect. The track version of the 2018 Aston Martin AM-RB 001 will compete with the LMP1 prototype.
