Reports in Germany indicate that plans are already underway for the next generation of the Audi A5. In fact, our spy photographers have already captured the model undergoing testing although it was under heavy camouflage.
This market segment has been very competitive of late but Audi’s new design language, elegant cabin styling coupled with and redesigned drive-trains will help the vehicle give its competitors a run for their money.
2017 Audi A5 Exterior
The exterior profile of the upcoming Audi A5 will be more stylish and elegant than the outgoing model. However, its dimensions remain unchanged. The 2017 Audi A5 will be based on the MLB platform commonly referred to as MLB Evo which has been enhanced. Due to these enhancements, the model will be 250 pounds lighter.
Other new changes on the exterior include a redesigned front bumper, larger air intakes and a modified grille which is flanked by new LED headlights. The side mirrors also feature a new design which is more stylish and more aerodynamic.
At the rear, the vehicle features redesigned LED taillights. The cabriolet rides on large hollow spoke wheels which add to its elegant exterior looks.
2017 Audi A5 Interior
On the inside, we understand that the cabin styling of the new model borrows much from the new A4. The cabin which is upholstered in quality leather will accommodate five passengers.
Many enthusiasts will love the model’s infotainment system. The system is a 8.3-inch MMI touch-screen infotainment system; a 12.3 inch Virtual Cockpit System which comes with guided assistance among other features is offered on optional basis for speed buffs like us. The system integrates Wi-Fi, 4 USB ports and Bluetooth connectivity. The vehicle will also feature an LCD screen at the front which will support radio, video and audio programs. There will also be an option for an LCD screen on the rear seats.
The cabin is also equipped with two charging ports. Other changes include repositioning of the gear shift which has been moved forward and a sporty steering wheel. Other features include a Bang & Olufsen audio system featuring 3D surround sound and 4G Smartphone integration. However, the automaker decided to retain the conventional speedometers. Safety is also well taken care off with features like lane departure warning, traction and stability control, door locks, satellite navigation, parking sensors, enhanced airbags and seat belts among others.
The A5 will get an array of upgraded diesel and gasoline drive-trains. To start with, the A5 will feature a 1.4 L, TFSI which produces 148 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque.
The second TFSI engine is a 2.0 L capable of delivering 187 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque; this engine is also tuned differently to produce 268 horses and 443 lb-ft of torque.
Switching over to diesel engines, the A5 comes with two drive-trains. The first diesel unit is a 2.0 L, 4-cylinder engine which pumps 148 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. The engine is also tuned to produce 184 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The second diesel engine is a 3.0 L, V-6 which is also offered in two tunes.
The first variant delivers 215 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The second tune delivers 268 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. In the US, the model will be offered with two drive-trains, the 2.0 TFSI which delivers 248 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque and the 215 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque 3.0 L V-6.
The model will be offered with three transmission systems i.e. a manual gearbox, S tronic and Tiptronic systems. The manual gearboxes and the Tiptronic will send power to either the front wheels or rear wheels but it is not clear whether S tronic transmission will be available to forward wheel models. The models will feature Audi’s Quattro AWD system that features wheel-selective torque control. Though official information on fuel economy, acceleration and top speed are not available as of this writing, the model is expected to have a better fuel economy, performance and lower CO2 emission.
Price and release date
Though Audi is yet to announce official release date and prices, our sources inform us that the vehicle will be offered to dealers in the last quarter of 2016. As for the price, the 2017 Audi A5 will start at around MSRP $ 40,000 for the base trim with higher trims and extra options costing as much as $ 70,000.
Major competitors of the 2017 Audi A5 will come from Mercedes, Lexus and BMW as well as upcoming models from other automakers who are fast closing the gap of sculpting luxurious vehicles.
