After a decade-long hiatus, Audi brought back the Audi A5 Coupe in 2007. Ever since then, the model has established a strong base in the market. Since 2007, the automaker has been selling upgraded versions of the first generation model. However, starting from next year (this fall in Europe), Audi will be selling a new generation of the A5 Coupe and Sportback. The new 2017 Audi A5 Sportback features all-rounded changes which include more power output, better aerodynamics and a new cabin that features the latest technologies in the industry.
In addition, Audi has taken the A5 through dieting which has helped enhance fuel efficiency and performance. In addition the new model is underpinned by a new platform, the MLB Evo platform that is also used on the Audi A4 as well as the Q7 SUV. The new design continues the evolution styling synonymous with Audi models. Read along for more information:
2017 Audi A5 Sportback Exterior
Audi has refined the A5 Sportback exterior which makes the model looks much more stylish than the outgoing version. The A5 also looks similar to the A4 sedan. At front, the model retains the “singleframe” grille. However, the grille is wider and looks flatter than the one on the outgoing models. It is flanked by sharper, angular headlights that use either regular LED lighting or Matrix LED lighting. It also features shorter overhangs and a longer hood line at the front while on the sides it features a wave-shaped three-dimensional shoulder line which helps accentuate the wheel arches.
At the rear, the A5 features new LED taillights; other features are carried over from the outgoing model. The new Sportback wheelbase is 2.36 inches longer of the Coupe and is 111.18 inches long, providing more space for rear passengers. Model is more aerodynamic with a coefficient of drag of only 0.25 which is the best in the segment.
2017 Audi A5 Sportback Interior
The interior of the new A5 also draws inspiration from the A4. The cabin is well-executed as you would expect of Audi. The dash has been revised and now features a continuous air vent strip that stretches the whole length of the dash. Behind the driver is a new 3-spoke, multifunction steering wheel. The steering wheel features shift paddles for models paired with automatic transmission.
An optional ambient LED lighting makes the cabin very lively.
The cabin is riddled with the most up-to-date technologies in the industry including the automaker’s virtual cockpit with digital instruments. It also comes with a huge TFT screen that measures 12.3 inches. This screen is mounted behind the steering wheel. It displays important information about the vehicle.
There is another 7.0 inch (an 8.3-inch tablet screen is optional) mounted on the dash to host the infotainment system and navigation system. The system is controlled via a rotary pushbutton placed on the central tunnel and a touchpad for map zoom and character input. The system can also be controlled via voice control and text search. There is an option for MMI navigation plus which adds an onboard SIM card for web access free for three years.
Other features include Bluetooth connectivity, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a USB charger. Induction Smartphone charging is optional. For audiophiles, theA5 comes with a premium Bang and Olufsen audio system.
At the rear, the A5 offers 16.95 cubic feet of cargo space which can be expanded by folding the rear bench which has a 40:20:40 split-folding functionality.
Safety is also well taken care of. The model offers a predictive efficiency assistant, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, parking assist, rear cross-traffic alert, collision avoidance assistant, exit warning and traffic sign recognition. There is an optional package that adds emergency call, Audi service request, online road assist and remote features which enable remote starting of the engine, unlocking and locking of doors as well as finding the vehicle’s location.
Engine Specs and performance
The A5 will be offered with a number of drive-trains. They will include two TFSI petrol mills and 3 TDI diesel engines. The engines will produce between 190 hp and 286 hp. According to the automaker, the engines will also have around 20% better fuel economy compared to the outgoing model.
However, in the USA, the A5 will be offered in a single drive-train. The unit, a 2.0 L, turbocharged 4-cylinder mill produces 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. This is an improvement from the outgoing engine which produces 220 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
The engines will be paired either to a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed automatic S tronic system. The most potent diesel mill in Europe will be mated to an 8-speed tiptronic system. The models will be offered in either Front Wheel Drive or All Wheel Drive. A hybrid drive-train is rumored but the automaker is yet to confirm or deny the rumors.
Price and release date
The 2017 Audi A5 goes on sale this fall in Europe. The model will arrive in the US early next year. Audi has not confirmed its official prices but we believe it will have an MSRP of around $42,000.
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the “top-dog” of this segment. However, the likes of BMW 4 series Coupe and Infiniti Q60 are also serious contenders.
