2017 Bentley Flying Spur V8 S

Bentley decided to give us an early view of their new sedan before it makes an official debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. The new sedan christened the 2017 Bentley Flying Spur V8 S will be sandwiched between the Flying Spur V8 and the Flying Spur W12.  The automaker has made the model in a way that it will stand as its own car than just mere upgrades from the Flying Spur V8.  The improvements are not so huge to challenge the W12 though.

Wolfgang Durheimer, the Chairman and CEO of Bentley said the new sedan is set to continue the Flying Spur’s unrivalled ability to combine dynamic ability and class-leading comfort making it the favorite choice of customers who prefer ultimate refinement and exhilarating spirit in their drives.

2017 Bentley Flying Spur V8 S Exterior

With a 120.7 inches long wheelbase and stretching 208.5 inches long, 77.8 inches wide and standing at a height of 58.6 inches, the Flying Spur V8 S is easily recognizable as a Flying Spur model. However, the model has been redesigned with its own look.

At the front, the V8 S features a matrix grille painted in black.  The front also featured redesigned LED headlights and there is an option for tinted headlights. The body colored louver on the base V8 and which extends across the air dam is given an aggressive design and extends over the background created by the air dam on the V8 S.

On the sides, there is an option for high-gloss side mirrors with a black finish.  The vehicle also features unique 20-inch open-spoke painted wheels. There is also an option for Muliner Specification 6-spoke 21-inch machined wheels.

The changes continue at the rear where you will find a rear diffuser finished in Beluga gloss giving the vehicle’s rear a unique look. Buyers can opt for taillights with tinted lens. Though not much, these changes on the front and rear fascia as well as the introduction of new wheels are enough to set apart the V8 S from other models in the lineup.

The cabin has also been restyled with a unique look that sets it apart. At the front, the vehicle features a 3-spoke steering wheel and a Piano-black wood veneer trim which give the cabin a dark but elegant look.

The sedan also features a 2-tone color scheme with a contrasting roof center bow. The “V8 S’ lettering is stitched on the seat headrests to remind you this is not the regular V8. Premium leather is the standard upholstery material though the automaker offers semi-aniline leather as an option. There is also an option for straight fluting on the seats.  Rear occupants will have control of the vehicle’s entertainment system via a touch-screen remote.

The cabin can also be equipped with Muliner Driving Specification which feature an interior accentuated by small-diamond quilting on the doors, dashboard and seat inserts. This gives the V8 S a unique interior look compared to other Flying Spur models.

Other standard features of the base Flying Spur V8 remain including a Wi-Fi hotspot that enables you to get your work done from the comfort of your seat, a 1,100 watt Naim  sound system, Google maps, power windows and doors, a three-zone climate control system, cruise control and a sunroof among others.

Safety is also enhanced with features like ABS, stability and traction control, lane keep assist, lane change warning, blind-spot monitoring, limited slip differential, locking differential, parking assist and upgraded airbags and seat belts to name just but a few.

Engine Specs and performance

The 2017 Bentley Flying Spur V8 S is powered by the same power-train as the base Flying Spur V8. However, the engine has been tweaked to produce more power. The twin-turbocharged 4.0 L V-8 engine now produces 521 hp and 502 lb –ft of torque. This represents a 21 hp and 14 lb-ft of torque improvement from the base Flying Spur V8.

The power enables the V8 S to hit 0-60 mph in only 4.6 seconds (0.3 seconds quicker than the V8) and has a top speed of 190 mph compared to the V8’s 183 mph top speed. The engine is mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission and it is offered with an AWD system that features a 40:60 rear-biased torque split. When the transmission is placed in “S” mode the 8th gear becomes locked out.

The engine is EPA rated to return 25.9 mpg on combined drives which is quite impressive considering the amount of power it delivers. A single fuel tank fill up can last for 520 miles. The impressive fuel economy rating is courtesy of various measures taken by Bentley. These measures include its ability to shut down up to 4 cylinders of its 8 cylinders while cruising, and the CU modification which streamlines its throttle response.

It is also a direct injection unit with advanced thermal management, low friction bearings and also has an energy recuperation system through an electrical charging system.

Price and release date

The sporty new sedan will be delivered to Bentley dealerships in the summer of this year. Before that, the sedan will make a stop at the Geneva Auto show which commences on March 3rd to 13th. As for the price, the automaker is still tight lipped. Bentley will probably reveal these details at the Geneva Auto Show.

However, expect the sedan to cost slightly more than the base Flying Spur V8 which has an MSRP of $ 206,725. Don’t be surprised as these cars don’t come on the cheap. Make sure to come back for more updates.
