BMW is on the blink of releasing a new model of the 5 Series sedan in the market. According to reports and the photos we have in our possession, the 2017 BMW 5-Series is based on the 7 Series. It uses the CLAR (cluster architecture) similar to the one used by the 7 Series.
This structure has resulted in a huge reduction of the sedan’s curb weight as the model uses huge doses of lightweight materials such as aluminum, magnesium and high-strength steel on its body. The weight has reduced by as much as 137 pounds despite the fact that the model has grown in size.
2017 BMW 5-Series Exterior
On the outside, we can say that the 5 Series has evolved rather than revolutionized. The exterior styling of the model is actually based on the bigger 7 Series sedan. At the front, the 5 Series features a wider and larger kidney grille with a chrome surround. Longer and flatter headlights that feature LED adaptive units as standard flank the grille. The new grille features active radiator slats, which enable more cooling air to get in when needed, otherwise remain closed to maximize aerodynamic efficiency. The model also features revised bumper intakes, which feature Air Curtains. The air curtains combine with air breathers to reduce air turbulence in the model’s wheel arches.
Onto the sides, the sedan features chrome surround on the windows and a pronounced beltline that is sportier compared to the outgoing model. Above the side skirts, the model retains its familiar character line above its side skirts that has a hockey-stick shape. At the rear, the sedan features revised taillights that extend into the sides of the model. The rear also features revised exhaust circular outlets that are arranged asymmetrically on either side.
Models powered by the 6-cylinder engine and those with the M Sport package will feature trapezoidal exhaust tips. The model rides on 18-inch double spoke light-alloy wheels. The M Sport package adds an ‘M’ aerodynamic kit with a front apron that features larger intakes, a diffuser-like rear apron as well as a side skirt trim. The package will also feature a shadow-line exterior trim , a lowered suspension and will ride on 19-inch M double-spoke wheels.
The sedan will be availed in 11 color shades. 20-inch wheels are also available for the model. There is also a choice of four alloy designs for the wheels.
2017 BMW 5-Series Interior
Just like the exterior, the interior also borrows much of its styling from the 7 Series. The two models actually feature almost identical center stacks. The only difference in their center stacks is that 5 Series has its HVAC controls integrated in a single element with radio controls; in the 7 Series, the HVAC and radio controls are separate. The dash is so designed to increase the space of the driver and that of the front passenger. The rear passengers will also enjoy an extra 1.2 inch of legroom and knee-room. The sedan also features storage spaces on the door pockets for holding beverage bottles.
The base model also comes with 16-way power adjustable front seats with adjustable side bolsters. 20-way power adjustable and multi-contour front seats are offered as an option. These seats also feature ventilation and an option for 8 massage programs. Opting for the M Sport package will get you a M Sport-trimmed steering wheel wrapped in leather, aluminum pedal covers, exclusive floor mats and SensaTec upholstered dashboard.
Tech-wise, the 5 Series features a 10.25-inch high-resolution screen that integrates the navigation system, phone operations, the entertainment system as well as other functions of the vehicle. Gesture control is available as an option. Other options include the Advanced Real-Time Traffic whose information is projected to the dash with a resolution that spans 800×400 pixels. The sedan also offers a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay and wireless phone charging.
Engine Specs and performance
According to insider news, the model’s engine lineup will fall into two groups i.e. the 530i and 540i. 530i models will use a turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0 L, 4-cylinder mill that produces 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque available from as low as 1,450 rpm. This engine powers the 5 Series to accelerate to 60 mph from standstill in 6 seconds.
For more juice, the automaker offers the 540i, which is powered by turbocharged 3.0 L inline-6 good for 335 horses and 332 lb-ft of torque available from 1,380 rpm. The engine drops the acceleration time from 0-60 mph to 4.7 seconds. The two engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission system and are offered in RWD as standard. Buyers can opt for the xDrive AWD system at an extra cost.
In Europe, the model will be offered in a number of turbo-diesel mills. It is not clear whether any diesel power-plant will be offered in the US market. Further reports indicate that a plug-in model dubbed the 530e as well as a sportier version “M550i” will be offered later on. The performance oriented M5 will produce over 600 horses according to rumors.
Price and release date
BMW will announce the prices of the 5 Series sedan at a later date. Bearing the new additions both inside and outside, expect the model’s price to increase albeit slightly. I think a starting price of around $50,000 is a good guess.
As you would expect, the major rivals of the 2017 BMW 5-Series come from Mercedes and Audi. As such, the 5 Series will face most rivalry from the Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The Jaguar XF also seeks to unsettle the market from the grip of the three German luxury automobile powerhouses.
