2016 Buick Cascada

After 25 years, Buick has decided to bring back their open-top model in the US. The vehicle which is dubbed the 2016 Buick Cascada was launched at 2015 North American International Auto Show ending the long wait of a Buick convertible in the US since the 1990 Reatta. The model sells in other markets as Opel, Holden and Vauxhall nametags.

Except for the soft roof, the Cascada 2016 is a typical Buick coupe. However, the most notable feature on the new car is the absence of the signature “waterfall’ grille bearing in mind that the word Cascada is a Spanish name for waterfall. This as well as its tri-shield emblem is what tell the Buick Cascada apart from the Australia’s Holden Cascada and the Europe’s Opel Casacda. The Buick is actually a re-badged Opel model.

The sides have a wedge-like view which is complemented by a raked A-pillar. The rear features wing-shaped LED taillights which are connected by a chromed strip. The rear also features stainless steel exhaust tips.

The car takes only 17 seconds to transform from coupe to convertible via the touch of a button in speeds of up to 31 mph. The vehicle rides on 20-inch aluminum wheels.

Sliding inside the Cascada’s cabin, one is immediately confronted by the contrast stitching that is on almost all surfaces. The Cascada is offered in only 2 trims i.e. the base and premium trims. The cabin also features soft touch material finishes which include leather.

The cabin will accommodate 4 passengers in a 2+2 seating arrangement. All seats are heated and upholstered in leather while the front is hooked up with sports bucket seats. The rear seats can be folded electrically to create extra cargo space when needed.

The trunk accommodates 13.4 cubic ft of cargo when the seats are up and 13.4 cubic feet with the seats folded. The rear seats are accessed via moving the front ones electrically. The front seat belts can automatically extend forward via telescopic arms similar to those of the Mercedes-Benz coupes. The cabriolet also features as standard; a 7-inch touch-screen integrated with the automaker’s IntelliLink and navigation system.

Other features are 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, StabiliTrak stability and traction control, electronic parking brakes and an OnStar audio system featuring 4G LTE Wi-Fi among others. The vehicle’s soft-roof features a multi-layer construction with thermal and acoustic protection. The rear deck storage lid features a backward opening to accommodate the roof when it is lowered.

Engine Specs

The Cascada comes with single drive train which is a turbocharged 1.6 L, 4-cylinder unit capable of producing 200 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque. The engine further features an over-boost function that pushes torque to 221 lb-ft.

The unit is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission system which sends power to the front wheels. To keep things in order, the vehicles’ front suspension features a macPherson based HiPer Strut unit while the rear is hooked up with a Watts Z-link semi-rigid rear suspension.

Price and release date

This is where things get better for enthusiasts. The Buick Cascada comes at a very affordable price for a convertible. In fact, it will be the most affordable convertible in the US when it arrives in dealer showrooms in January 2016.

The base model will retail at MSRP $33,990 while the Premium trim will start at $ 36,990. With these prices, the Cascada is very affordable compared to the German rivals in its class. In addition, it is even cheaper than convertibles smaller than it in size such as the Audi A3 despite the fact that it packs more features than the A3.

Top competitors of the 2016 Buick Cascada will be the BMW 4-Series Convertible and Audi A5 Convertible.
