At the New York Auto Show, Buick unveiled the highly anticipated 2018 Buick Enclave. That was not all, alongside the standard Buick Enclave was another model that looked like the Enclave but with a slightly better styling. The model in question is the new 2018 Buick Enclave Avenir. Avenir is the automaker’s new luxury sub-brand. The Enclave becomes the first Buick model to get an Avenir treatment. The sub-brand is targeted to those buyers who would like to buy more luxurious Buick models. The sub-brand will extend to other Buick models in future. Compared to the standard Enclave models, the Enclave Avenir makes most of the optional features standard along with offering superior materials. Overall, the Buick Enclave is a very popular SUV and the addition of the Avenir trim will make it even more popular. I hear that the model was taken through a slimming formula that saw it lose 400 lbs.
2018 Buick Enclave Exterior
The new Enclave exterior looks better than that of the outgoing model, which was also good looking. Gone is the wide-eyed look at the front. It has been replaced with a traditional-looking grille and stunning headlights. The entire exterior body has a sculpted look that tapers off at the rear to make up a smooth look. The base models ride on 18-inch aluminum wheels while top trims feature 20-inch aluminum wheels.
The Enclave Avenir adds an “Evonik Acrylute” exterior lighting package that features 100 LEDs. The model also features a 3D mesh grille, rear camera and a number of Avenir badges. The model rides on 20-inch aluminum wheels finished in pearl nickel. At the rear, the model has a hands-free liftgate whose sensor is illuminated by the automaker’s tri-shield logo.
2018 Buick Enclave Interior
The 2018 Enclave is offered in four trims including the new Avenir trim that will in future become a separate sub-brand. Other trims are, Base, Essence, Premium and the top Premium trim
The cabin of the 2018 Enclave is very serene due to a use of active noise cancellation and QuietTuning engineering. The model has premium materials. The leather is the standard upholstery material. Second-row passengers benefit from captain chairs and separate climate controls.
Tech-wise, the 2018 Enclave comes with an 8.0-inch frameless infotainment screen that supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay Smartphone integration. A Rear Camera Mirror displays the rear view on a screen fitted in the place of the traditional rearview mirror. Every Enclave features a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. There is an option for GM’s opt-in service. This service analyzes a driver’s driving style and suggests ways to improve.
All models are also fitted with an ionization feature that improves the air in the cabin
On the Avenir, the seats are well arranged to ensure ease of access. The rear seats have a power-folding capability that comes in handy in case more cargo space is required. The model also adds an array of features as standard. To start with, the Enclave Avenir features an in-vehicle air ionization system that makes the air in the cabin fresh and cleaner. Other features include a Chestnut and Ebony trim with contrast stitching and piping. The front-row headrests, sill plates and doormats have the Avenir badging to set the model apart from standard Enclaves. While all models have heated and cooled front seats, the Avenir adds heating to second-row seats as standard. The same is available on the standard Enclave as an option.
Buick offers several active technologies for the SUV including automatic emergency braking, rear parking assist, forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring. The model also comes with a Rear Seat Reminder to make sure you don’t leave your young ones sleeping on the back seat.
Although it is a mid-size SUV, its cargo capacity can put some of the full-size models to shame. With all seats up, it has a cargo space of 23.6 cubic feet. Lowering the third row expands cargo capacity to 58 cubic feet that can further expand to 97.6 cubic feet upon folding the second and third-row seats.
Engine and performance
A single engine power the Buick Enclave. The unit given this task is a 3.6 L, V-6 mill that pumps out 302 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The engine combines with a 9-speed automatic gearbox. The model is available with either the intelligent AWD system that features active twin-clutch for the rear differential or an FWD system. FWD models need 7.2 seconds to accelerate from 0-60 mph. The model is also equipped with a stop/start technology to help save on gas.
The Enclave is EPA rated at 17 mpg, 20 mpg and 25 mpg on city, highway and on combined drives respectively for models equipped with FWD. Models with the AWD system are rated at 17 mpg in city drives, 24 mpg and on highway drives.
Buick also added a MacPherson strut at the front and 5-link rear suspensions that are tuned to offer a quiet and isolated ride without compromising control.
When the model is well equipped, it can tow as much as 5,000 lbs.
