Many automakers envy the exclusive class the trio of Mercedes, BMW and Audi has cut for themselves. These German-based automakers define what luxury means in automobile terms. It is not surprising other automakers are always trying to up their games to their levels. GM is one of them.
The American-based automaker through its Cadillac brand has launched an upgraded ATS-V sedan and coupe variant which have set their sights on the German automobiles. Though Cadillac needs to tie some loose ends on the models, as they are, they won’t look out of place when parked in the same garage with the top German-made models. 2016 Cadillac ATS-V Coupe Exterior
The exterior is based on the Cadillac ATS Sedan but is slightly modified to feature a very aggressive stance. The 2016 Cadillac ATS-V Coupe features a large front grille which allows more cooling air to be channeled inside to cool the turbocharged engine. This grille features a special mesh pattern. It is flanked by LED headlights and LED DRLs.
The front also features a unique carbon fiber hood that features air extracting vents. There is also a front splitter as well as unique fenders while the rear features LED taillights and a rear spoiler. The new fenders are much wider to allow the new 18-inch aluminum wheels to be fit in. The wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.
A Carbon Fiber Package adds an aggressive front splitter, a rear diffuser and a hood vent trim. Overall, the vehicle is very attractive and aerodynamic.
2016 Cadillac ATS-V Coupe Interior
The cabin is very luxurious just, short of the kind of luxury offered by Mercedes and BMW. I love the fact that GM has done away with hard plastics replacing them with leather surfaces with a piano-black color trim. This piano-black trim is contrasted by a lovely stitching which make the cabin look very attractive.
The center console is nicely packaged but I preferred buttons and knobs in the outgoing model so the new capacitive touch controls are a letdown for me. However, I know there is a number of buyers who prefer the capacitive controls so I won’t complain much. Passengers will find its 18-way performance seats particularly comfortable and luxurious.
The interior also feature a huge doe of microfiber accenting. Other standard features include the automakers’ CUE infotainment system, a Bose stereo system for the audiophile and 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity.
Another disappointing features missing in the cabin are CarPlay and Android Auto. However, there is a cooled charging cubby hidden behind the dashboard that supports both USB charging and a wireless charging pad.
Recaro performance seats are offered as an option. Other optional features include a navigation system, alloy pedals and HID headlights which are offered in the Luxury package.
For safety, the Coupe comes standard with stabiliTrak electronic stability, driveline traction control, a full package of airbags (side-mounted airbags, 1st and 2nd row curtain overhead airbags and front knee airbags for the driver and front passenger) and an airbags occupancy sensor. Other standard safety features include enhanced seatbelts, cruise control and ABS. For more, buyers can opt for the $1,500 safety and security package. This package adds rain sensing wipers, forward collision alert, lane change alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, automatic cruise control and parking assist among others.
Racing enthusiasts will love the Coupe’s Performance Data Recorder (PDR). This system comprises of a forward facing camera which is fitted behind the rearview mirror. It records one’s driving sessions and displays road speed, steering angle, engine rpm as well as a G-force meter.
Engine Specs and performance
Under the hood, the coupe is fitted with the same engine as its elder sister, the ATS sedan. The mill is a turbocharged 3.6 L, V-6 which spits as much as 464 horses and 445 lb-ft of torque. This power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox with automatic rev-matching during downshifts.
Spending an extra $2,000 will get you an 8-speed automatic system which features paddle shifters. With the manual gearbox, the coupe accelerates to 60 mph from standstill in 4.2 seconds while the 8-speed automatic system pushes the car to make the same run in 3.8 seconds. The Coupe will have a top speed of 185 mph.
EPA fuel economy ratings are yet to be released but the automaker estimates the ATS-V Coupe to return 16 mpg, 24 mpg and 19 mpg on city, highway and combined drives respectively with the automatic system. The manual transmission lowers 1 mpg on highway drive.
Price and release date
The 2016 Cadillac ATS-V Coupe has an MSRP of $ 62,655 exclusive of a $995 destination charge. However, choosing all optional features will see you parting away with over $ 70,000. The Coupe is already available in dealer showrooms.
