The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is slowly turning to a de facto international auto show for luxury automakers. In this year’s edition, several automakers have revealed their new luxury haulers as well as future concepts. One of the automakers flaunting their future luxury models was Cadillac with their new full-size sedan dubbed the “ 2016 Cadillac Escala Concept ”.
This is not the first time Cadillac is launching a Concept at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The automaker showcased the 4-door Ciel convertible concept in 2011 and the Elmiraj coupe concept in 2013. The new concept introduces the next-gen in the evolution of the Cadillac brand. The model presents Cadillac’s statement of intent and it is aimed to reclaim the top spot in the premium sedan segment. Escala is a Spanish name which stands for “scale”. 2016 Cadillac Escala Concept Exterior
The 2016 Cadillac Escala Concept is huge. The model stretches 210.5 inches long (around 6-inches longer than the CT6) with a width of 76.7 inches long and a height of 57.3 inches. It has a wheelbase of 127.1 inches long.
At the front, the Escala features a new face characterized by a gigantic trapezoid-shaped grille which is surrounded by new headlights which use OLED technology. The headlights are very thin. Below the grille is an intimidating bumper with a vent that stretches the entire width of the front fascia. The bumper styling is finished off with vertical DRLs similar to the ones on the Cadillac CTS. The engine hood is unique.
On the sides, the automaker has done away with the B- and C-pillars on the windows while thin elements have replaced side mirrors.
At the rear, the Escala features OLED taillights which are as thin as the headlights. The sedan also moves away from the traditional; trunk lid and features a huge hatch door instead. The rear fascia styling is finished with a trapezoid recess that looks similar to the front grille.
The Escala rides on 22-inch wheels that feature two layers of spokes. The wheels sport a chrome and gloss-black finish.
2016 Cadillac Escala Concept Interior Styling
The interior is very stylish, luxurious and convenient, a result of excellent craftmanship. I understand that the interior of the Escala was assembled using hand-cut-and-sewn techniques. The design is simple but very elegant. The model features a 2-tier dashboard with a wooden deck below the main section. The dash features OLED screens. The main screen is mounted behind the steering wheel and it displays information on rpm, speed, navigation data and mileage. The main screen is flanked by two more screens on either side. The one on the right displays the number of devices connected to the vehicle and the number of passengers in the car while the one on the left displays controls of the infotainment system.
Other features include a 3-spoke steering wheel wrapped in white leather and with chrome inserts. The steering wheel is kept clean; it features 4 buttons as well as touch-sensitive controls for both thumbs.
The automaker also revealed that they are crafting new designs for control and connectivity of technologies in the car. This is aimed at offering an engaging user experience in future Cadillac models. Other features include hand-tailored fabrics on the seats and door panels, features not available on current Cadillac models.
In general, the cabin of the Escala promises to provide ultimate luxury and convenience to passengers and an engaging driving experience to the driver.
Engine Specs and performance
Under the hood, the Escala concept will feature a V-8 mill way more powerful than the V-6 that currently powers the CT6. The engine is a twin-turbo 4.2 L, V-8 which will produce in excess of 500 horses. This engine will first make a debut in the CT6. The Escala will be offered in RWD for large sedans, a platform Cadillac debuted in the 2015 CT6. The engine will feature an Active Fuel Management system which will enable to save on gas.
This is Cadillac’s most advanced body structure and it is expected to offer high levels of efficiency and agility.
Price and release date
Being a future concept, there are no prices to talk about, however, being a Cadillac, don’t expect it to come cheap. In fact, I believe the model will be positioned above the CT6 meaning it will be significantly more expensive than the CT6. I really hope sedan will make it into production.
