Since its introduction for the 2014 model year, the Chevrolet SS has continued to gain popularity in the family-sedan segment. Most enthusiasts love the fact that it is ably equipped with features common in muscle cars like its V-8 engine.
Enthusiasts also love its convenience offering. Chevrolet has hooked up the SS with only subtle visual upgrades since the model underwent a more comprehensive redesign for the 2016 model year. Read along for more information:
2016 Chevrolet SS Exterior
Having had received more extensive changes for the 2015 model year, the new model comes with subtle exterior changes. The bumper has received the most significant facelift. Position of DRLs has been changed. In addition, the DRLs are now surrounded with a chrome trim. Although it is hard to notice, the headlights have received a new LED lighting.
Vertical air ducts have been relocated to the outer edges while the center section has also been retouched. The grille features a new honeycomb mesh whose chrome frame has been thickened on the sides and its pattern discontinued at the top. The front fascia also features an ‘SS’ badge on the bumper.
The model’s sporty hood now features two black-painted vents which make the front fascia look more aggressive.
On the sides, the model features new 19-inch, cast-aluminum wheels with Brembo brakes and heated power mirrors. At the rear, only the quad-exhaust outlets have been retouched. Other features are carried over unchanged.
Overall, the automaker has added a new exterior color christened “Slipstream” which replaces Alchemy Purple Metallic and Perfect Blue.
Its dimensions are unchanged. The sedan is 195.5 inches long, 74.7 inches wide and has a height of 57.9 inches while its wheelbase stretches 114.8 inches.
2016 Chevrolet SS Interior
Chevrolet offers the 2016 Chevrolet SS sedan in a single but well equipped trim. Like the exterior, the cabin is also largely unchanged. Leather is the standard upholstery material and features a contrast stitching. There are suede inserts on the doors and the wraparound dash is carried over unchanged.
The front seats are heated and cooled while the rear seats are only heated. The front seats are also 8-way power adjustable and feature lumbar support. The driver’s seat also comes with memory settings. The model’s instrument cluster features a trip computer surrounded by a sporty analogue gauge on each side, one for the vehicle’s speed and the other for engine speed. There is also a standard head-up display.
There is another screen, a 8.0-inch MyLink touch-screen which features Smartphone integration. The screen has been upgraded to provide faster processing times. The SS also features a dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and ignition, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel.
The car is very spacious and can comfortably accommodate 6-foot tall passengers without much discomfort. The model offers 16.4 cubic feet of cargo space.
Technological features on the new SS include audio connectivity, Bluetooth phone, a navigation system, voice controls, Siri Eyes Free, a 9-speaker Bose sound system which features a CD player, satellite radio as well as USB/iPod connectivity. The vehicle also features OnStar with integrates WiFi hotspot capability and 4G LTE. OnStar enables on-demand roadside assistance, automatic crash notification, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation.
Safety is well taken care of with features like antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control and a full package of airbags. It also features a parallel-parking assist system, rear-cross traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, a rearview camera and forward collision alert.
Engine Specs and performance
The 2016 Chevy SS derives its power form a V-8 engine which has a displacement of 6.2 liters. The engine produces 415 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission system which send power to the rear wheels.
The models paired with an automatic transmission accelerate to 60 mph from standstill in 4.9 seconds. Models with a manual gearbox are 0.2 seconds quicker taking 4.7 seconds to complete the same run.
In terms of fuel economy, automatic models are expected to return 14 mpg on city, 21 mpg on highway and 17 mpg on combined drives. Manual models on the other hand are expected to return 15 mpg on city, 21 mpg on highway and 17 mpg on combined drives. These numbers place the Chevy among the most “thirsty” models in this segment.
Price and release date
The 2016 Chevrolet SS has a starting price of $ 47,600. As said earlier, the SS is offered in a single trim. The 2016 model comes with only three options, they are a $900 sunroof, $500 spare tire and manual transmission which is offered free of charge. 2016 Chevrolet SS is already in showrooms and expecting customers.
