As the electric vehicle’s market heats up, automakers are rushing to take advantage of this emerging market. Though Tesla is steps ahead of the others, they are closing the gap pretty fast. One such automaker is General Motors.

The automaker is anxious to beat Tesla by offering an affordable, fully electric drive-train which will be sold to the masses. The automaker is not even coy about the car and has recently released official videos of the vehicle undergoing testing.

Chevrolet has not altered the exterior profile we saw earlier on its concept. The body structure is made of a good mix of aluminum, carbon fiber and mineral magnesium; however, the body does not exactly mimic BMW’s expensive carbon fiber body structure.

This exterior profile borrows a lot from the 2016 Chevrolet Volt. At the front, the vehicle features a vertical bumper. It also features a slender grille and LED headlights identical to those of the Chevrolet Volt. The rear features a C-pillar instead of the anticipated wrap-around glass. The C-pillar is applied with a floating roof design similar to the BMW i3 and a host of Nissan models.

Taillights still take a horizontal look but their design has been upgraded compared to the concept model. The vehicle will also feature venting raise fenders. Check this page later for more update on this potential game changer in the EV segment.

Though we have little information about the interior styling at the moment, we understand that the designers have hooked up the “green vehicle” with a two-tone interior. The interior features a flat floor and pedestal mounted on the seats.

The center console is attached to the seats. The vehicle also features an LCD screen and keyless ignition. The car can also be started via an app. The app is also used to drive the car autonomously in and out of a garage. The app also allows for ride-sharing management for functions such as payment, reservations and tracking.


Engine Specs and Performance

GM has been improving the cell technology in a bid to offer a vehicle with a long range.  The Chevrolet took the lithium-ion battery from the 2nd generation Volt and improved it to offer more output and to last longer. According to the automaker, the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV will have a range of around 200 miles.

In terms of output, the vehicle will deliver around 150 hp and around 300 lb-ft of torque. The automaker is yet to disclose official information about its drive-train. However, according to rumors, the vehicle will pack a 40 kWh motor.

The vehicle is believed to make the 0-60 mph run in 7 seconds and has a 90 mph top speed. The battery will take 45 minutes to recharge from 0 to 80%.

Price, release date and competition

The automaker has fast-tracked the car into production and the EV is set to be released earlier than we anticipated. According to GM, the vehicle will be offered to all 50 states as opposed to only the states with advanced fast charging stations. In fact, GM is using the slogan “meant-for every-one” to market the vehicle which is targeted to all as opposed to those with a certain level of income. Though the automaker has not announced an official price, the EV will start at around MSRP $30,000 after factoring in incentives.


Though Tesla is facing competition from all directions, the master of electric drive-trains is not asleep. After building electric vehicles targeted to high income earners, Tesla has no set its sights on the masses with a new electric vehicle with over 200 miles range in 2017. The vehicle dubbed the Tesla Model 3 will also be affordably priced at around $ 35,000.

The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV will make a debut at the Consumer Electronics Show which will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada in January.
