When it was first unveiled at the New York Auto show back in 2005, the Chrysler Aspen was the first ever SUV to carry the Chrysler Badge. The model whose sales started a year later was based on the Dodge Durango.
However, just like the Kia Borrego, the timing for its unveiling was bad and performed poorly in the market. Though SUVs were a hit at the time, rising fuel prices and other external market conditions kept buyers away leading to its discontinuation in 2009.
However, times have now changed, fuel prices are cheaper and the Americans are going crazy over crossovers of all sizes such that every automaker is trying to bring in a crossover model into the US. Not to be left behind, Chrysler is also working to bring back the Aspen SUV.
2017 Chrysler Aspen Concept Exterior
Exterior and interior specs are still a mystery at the moment. Previous Aspen models were based on the Dodge Durango which the new model is expected to adopt. According to rumors, the new model will have a less aggressive exterior. It will be sculptured with lightweight materials which translate to a lighter model which is more fuel efficient and with a better performance.
The new 2017 Chrysler Aspen Concept will accommodate up to 8 passengers meaning it will be longer and also feature a longer wheelbase than its predecessor. Latest technology will also be used to craft its body parts such as its headlights and taillights which will feature LED lighting. At the front, the SUV will certainly feature a new grille and a redesigned bumper.
Other likely features include new wheel design, new side mirrors and a redesigned exhaust system. We will give you clearer information once we have it.
2017 Chrysler Aspen Concept Interior
Chrysler will introduce a third row of seats in the Aspen’s cabin. The new cabin will be very different from the predecessor model. The SUV’s cabin will provide a large space for both passengers and cargo.
Lower trim models will be upholstered in quality cloth while higher trims will feature leather upholstery. Expect to find a redesigned dashboard and instruments cluster with modern features. Technological features such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, Smartphone integration, AUX and USB ports will also be featured.
The vehicle will also feature a modern infotainment system with large touch screen and a premium acoustic system will certainly feature. In addition to enhanced airbags for each passenger, expect an array of safety features and driving aids.
Engine Specs and Performance
In 2006, the Aspen debuted with a hybrid engine making it the first SUV ever to feature a hybrid drive-train. More SUVs have embraced the technology since then. Chrysler has not divulged any information about the Aspen’s engine specs as of this writing.
However, according to rumor mills, the Aspen swill feature two conventional engines. A hybrid drive-train will follow up later. Unlike the old versions which were offered in large V8 engines, the new model will feature V6 units. The base engine will be a 3.2 L Pentastar V-6 unit good for 271 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque.
The second engine will be a 3.6 L, Pentastar V-6 engine capable of delivering around 300 horses and same amount of torque (281 lb-ft of torque) as the base 3.2 L engine. The models will be offered in both FWD and AWD modes. The engines will have an impressive fuel economy with the base engine estimated to return 22 mpg in city and 28 mpg on highway drives.
More details about other engine specs will be released as the model nears release date.
Price and release date
It is not clear when the model will be released to the market. However, according to rumors, the model will hit dealerships at the end of 2016 or early 2017. The price is also a mystery as of now but the vehicle is likely to start at around $ 30,000 MSRP.
As at this moment, Chrysler lacks a serious contender in the crossover market segment, a situation the new Aspen is meant to change. When it comes out, the model is expected to go head to head with the likes of Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia if it is hooked with premium features but likely rivals will be the Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder and Chevrolet Traverse.
