The Dodge Challenger T/A was originally built for racing purposes for the Sports Car Club of America on the Trans Am racing series way back in 1970 hence the name T/A. Dodge went on to build 2,399 more models. Its attractive look and huge power attracted many enthusiasts making it one of the most sought after model by muscle car collectors. Dodge is set to revive the nameplate with the launch of three models for the 2017 model year. The 2017 models derive their inspiration from the original model’s legacy and although they are not as wild as the original models, they are wild in their own right. The models blend in modern cues with the old.
The 2017 Dodge Challenger T/A will be offered in three trim levels i.e. the base T/A, mid T/A Plus and the top trim T/A 392. The three models share a similar exterior look. Dodge showcased the 2017 Dodge Challenger T/A along with the 2017 Dodge Charger Daytona, a five-door performance-oriented sedan (the Daytona is reviewed separately) at the 2016 Woodward Dream Cruise held in Detroit. 2017 Dodge Challenger T/A Exterior
The exterior is largely inspired by the original model of the 1970s. The front fascia, hood, roof and the decklid feature a Satin Black trim. The model also features the T.A body stripes which augur well with the Satin Black trim. The Mopar wheels also feature the Dodge stripes. A “Challenger” nameplate features prominently on the grille of the T/A. Buyers have an option to order their T/As with hood pins as well as the new Yellow Jacket High Impact and Green Go exterior paint finish.
The T/A Plus exterior is similar to that of the base T/A. However, the T/A 392 features T/A Air Catcher headlights, Brembo high-performance 6-piston calipers at the front and 4-piston calipers at the rear. It also features a cold-air NACA hood system. The model also features 20-inch by 9.5-inch forged aluminum wheels in a Low Gloss Black finish. They are wrapped in Pirelli performance wheels (275/40 Z-series). The models also feature “392” fender decals to show the model is the “top dog” of the Dodge Challenger T/A lineup.
2017 Dodge Challenger T/A Interior
The cabin is also well taken care of. Like the Daytona, the T/A also features aluminum interior bezels which blend well with the Black and Gloss Black trim. The seats have been upgraded for a better lateral support. The seats also feature Houndstooth cloth inserts. The steering wheel comes with performance contouring. The model also features Velour-bound mats with the “Dodge” logos.
The most captivating feature in the cabin is the tic-toc-tach gauge cluster which is derived from the 971. The T/A Plus adds heated seats which are upholstered in Nappa leather with a Black and Tungsten contrast stitching. The seats also feature T/A logos. The model also features an 8.4-inch Uconnect touch-screen infotainment system. The system integrates Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The T/A Plus also comes with a 6-speaker sound system that features a 276-watt amplifier. The Uconnect system enables drivers to record reaction times, acceleration and lap times when out on the tracks. This information is displayed to the driver via a 7.0-inch TFT display mounted in the instrument cluster.
Engine Specs and performance
The 2017 Dodge Charge T/A will be powered by two engines. The base T/A and T/A Plus models will be powered by a 5.7 L, V-8 capable of producing 375 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. The Challenger T/A 392 will be powered by a 6.4 L, HEMI V-8 good for 485 horses and 475 lb-ft of torque. Both engines will be paired to either a 6-speed manual gearbox which is offered as standard or an optional 8-speed automatic transmission system.
For a more engaged driving experience on the tracks, Dodge will offer the models with an option for a Super Track Pack which features performance-enhancement equipment including high-performance brakes, a lowered suspension, Bilstein shock absorbers, a 3-mode stability-control system and 20-inch by 9-inch forged aluminum Mopar wheels finished in a black trim. The wheels are wrapped in Pirelli tires or Goodyear Eagle F1 tires.
