Ferrari 458 Review

The Ferrari 458 is an Italian-produced mid-engine sports car. It came as a replacement for the Ferrari F430, and was officially unveiled for the first time at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The body computer system was developed by Magneti Marelli Automotive Lighting.


The 458’s exterior was traditionally designed by Pininfarina, for improved aerodynamics which don’t harm the beauty of the vehicle. The front grille introduces deformable winglets with the ability to lower at high speeds for drag reduction.

The vehicle is equipped with a vent that leads up to the headlight and lets air cool the brakes and then feeds it out of the channel on the other side, in order to reduce lift over the front arches.

According to the manufacturer, the small lip on the boot offers lots of downforce, and a movable wing is not necessary.

Believe it or not, the 458’s interior was designed through the input from former Ferrari Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher.

The layout is common to racing cars. The steering wheel design includes many controls otherwise located on the dashboard or on stalks, like turning signals or high beams.


Engine and performance

The 458 uses a 4,499 cc V8 engine belonging to the “Ferrari/Maserati” F136 engine family, delivering 562 hp at 398 pound-feet of torque. The engine has direct fuel injection, which is a first for Ferrari mid-engine setups in its road cars.

The engine is mated to a dual-clutch 7-speed GETRAG gearbox transmission. There is no traditional manual option, making it is the first mainstream model to be offered without a manual transmission.

The vehicle is equipped with E-Diff and F1-Trac traction control systems, in order to improve the cornering and longitudinal acceleration by 32%.

The adaptive magnetorheological dampers are co-developed with BWI Group.

Ferrari’s official 0–60 mph acceleration is 2.9-3.0 seconds. Whereas the top speed is 202 mph. The fuel consumption in combined cycle is 21.2 mpg-imp and 17.7 mpg-US.


There are many different versions of the Ferrari 458.

458 Italia (2009) – two-seat berlinetta 458 and the first variant to be officially unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show on 15 September 2009. Its price is around $ 240,000 (MSRP).

458 Italia Special Edition (2012) – limited version of 458 Italia for the Chinese market (20 units), in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Ferrari in China since the first Ferrari was ordered in Beijing. The vehicle was unveiled in Italia Center of Shanghai World Expo Park. Its price is in the range of $ 204,115- $ 267.943 (MSRP).

458 Spider (2011) – the convertible variant of the 458 Italia, which made its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Its price starts with $ 257,000 on US market, and goes up to $ 309,000, which is the starting price on the European market.

Ferrari 458 Speciale (USA) (2015) – the top performing 458 Italia, unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

458 Challenge (2010) – a track-only racecar designed to be fielded in the Ferrari Challenge. It was presented at the Ferrari Annual Dealer Meeting in July, 2010.

Ferrari 458 Italia GT2 (2011) – a GTE class racer designed to take part in Championships sanctioned by ACO and FIA. So far, it had a jaw-dropping racing record. In 2015 Ferrari 458 Italia GT2 vehicles compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship, European Le Mans Series as well as Tudor United SportsCar Championship.

458 Italia GT3 (2011) – slightly lighter and more powerful version in comparison to the GT2. The 458 Italia GT3 holds the record for number of Titles won in many international Championships.

458 Italia Grand-Am (2012) – a modified version of the 458 GT3 for Grand-Am. Same weight, but less downforce. The vehicle made its debut at the 2012 24 Hours of Daytona.
