After the release of European version of Civic in 2011, Honda needed quite some time (5 years) to release the Type R model. Since it made a lap record of 7:50.63 around Nürburgring Nordschleife, 2016 Honda Civic Type R’s performance capability is unquestionable.
The bodywork has been modified from simple and plain to aggressive hot hatch look. At the front of the vehicle, there are two space-consuming upper and lower grilles. The front splitter attached to the bumper serves to reduce lift at high speeds, while at the same time it redirects some of the air toward the flat underside and rear diffuser, thus making the car “sucked” onto the road. Functional vent outlets are placed above the front wheels and behind them. When it comes to the rear, that’s where the magic happens in terms of design.
However, the enthusiasts are not thrilled by the exterior and claim that 2016 Honda Civic Type R is reminiscent of those family minivans from early ‘90s.
Compared to the exterior, the interior is pretty modestly designed. As typical for Type R models, gear lever is made from machined aluminum alloy, while the front seats are designed and sculpted to provide strong support and comfort for the driver’s as well as passengers’ back. The cabin is mainly black, but red details are found on almost all of its parts. For instance, the black leather steering wheel is decorated with red double-stitching leather inserts.
The heart and soul of this vehicle is direct-injected turbocharged 2.0 liter 4-cylinder VTEC TURBO engine. Having direct injection and VTEC valve technology that further boosts low-end torque, 2016 Honda Civic Type R pumps out 306 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque. It has a short-shifting six-speed manual which shifts the power to the front wheels.
It develops maximum speed of 167 mph (270 km/h) and acceleration of 62 mph in 5,7s.
As for the brakes stopping this mean machine, they are four-piston Brembo front calipers clamping down on 13.8-inch drilled rotor, and are concealed behind a set of 19-inch alloy wheels shod in 235/35 ZR 19 rubber.
Price and release date
2016 Honda Civic Type R was unveiled on March 4, at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Official price still remains unknown, but it has been estimated that it will cost somewhere around $31,000.
Although the car fanatics are awaiting for the release of Honda HR-V-Acura-sport-variant, this is quite a start.
