During this year’s 2016 Detroit Auto Show, Hyundai caused quite a stir with their new 2017 Genesis G90 sedan whose guns are pointed to other S-Class competitors. However, the sedan was not the only model carrying the new Genesis luxury badge.
The Korean automakers new luxury brand badges were also carried by a mid-size sedan dubbed “the 2017 Genesis G80 ”. The sedan is actually a rebadged Hyundai Genesis sedan. In fact, there are hardly any noticeable changes such that many people won’t realize that it’s not the Genesis sedan they are used to. Only its new Genesis wing emblem and “G80” badges on its rump tell them apart.
The mid-size G80 and the full-size G90 sedans make up the first two models of six new models Hyundai plans to release by 2020. Others coming up later include a G60 coupe and a G70 sedan which are also inspired by the Vision G concept. The other two models will be SUVs which are yet to be named.
2017 Genesis G80 Exterior
Except for mild touches, the exterior looks of 2017 Genesis G80 and the Hyundai Genesis sedan it is replacing are identical. The slight changes include a redesign of the bumpers and a flashy, more stylish and imposing grille on the front fascia. There are also new air intakes to help cool its turbocharged engine.
At the back, the vehicle features a sloping and aerodynamic finish of the trunk line which reminds me of the Toyota Avalon or the Audi A7. That’s just about all the exterior differences of the G80 and its predecessor.
Generally, the body still retains the long and stylish body lines that show off its sense of quality and refinement. The mid-sized sedan will ride on 18-inch alloy wheels.
2017 Genesis G80 Interior
Though we didn’t get the actual interior dimensions, the new cabin looks larger. This will give its occupants more leg space. The sedan will accommodate five passengers. In front, the cabin features a more stylish dashboard with matte gloss and wooden trim finishes.
The cabin is made of soft-touch materials which are crafted with excellent attention to detail. Its intuitive and centrally located scroll wheel and push buttons mimic those on the Audi’s MMI system. The buttons help the driver toggle through the navigation system, phone and other functions.
The base model is adequately loaded with features such as heated front seats with a 12-way power adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, rain sensing wipers, paddle shifters, hands-free trunk opener and Blue Link infotainment system to name just but a few.
More features are offered on optional basis. The vehicle also comes with an array of safety equipments such as bolstered airbags and a package of driving aids.
The base engine of the 2017 G80 will be a carryover of the current base engine of the Genesis. This is further evidenced by the ‘3.8” badge on the G80’s trunk-lid. This 3.8 L, V-6 engine is capable of producing 333 hp.
According to credible sources, the automaker will replace the current normally aspirated 5.0 L, V-8 engine offered optionally on the Genesis sedan with a twin-turbocharged 3.3 L unit. The new drive-train is expected to produce around 480 hp. This engine will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission system. The engine is currently being engineered by the automaker’s N performance division.
Hyundai promised to shed more light on the Genesis G80 sedan engine and other specs at the New York Auto Show in March.
Price and release date
The model is expected to hit the showrooms later in the summer of 2016. As for the price, Hyundai is yet to make an official announcement. We expect the automaker to make this announcement during the New York Auto Show in March but expect the car to have a starting price of around $ 38,000 MSRP.
Having sold over 100,000 units of the outgoing Genesis sedan in only 18 months after its launch in 2014, the automaker expects the incoming G80 sedan to do even better.
