When it comes to making luxury cars, Germany, Italy, USA and UK are ahead of manufacturers from other countries. However the South Korea’s Hyundai is looking to have a piece of the cake.
The automaker is set to release their own luxury sedan ready to compete with the likes of BMW, Mercedes and Audi. The vehicle which will carry the Genesis G90 nametag will offer the best technological innovations, high levels of convenience, refinement and a dynamic performance according to the automaker. Though the automaker says the Genesis G90 will be the best in this class, I believe Hyundai is too optimistic considering competitors in this segment.
The Genesis will be the company’s new global luxury brand and the G90 will be its flagship vehicle which is replacing the Equus sedan.
2017 Genesis G90 Exterior
The new 2017 Genesis G90 will be the first Hyundai luxury sedan model to be based on the Athletic Elegance Styling design language developed by the company’s Prestige Design Division.
The exterior features a harmonization of beauty and dynamism. At the front, the Genesis will feature a crest-looking grille fitted with the new winged emblem. Flanking the grille will be a pair of LED headlights. At the rear, you will find a chrome beltline bridge that integrates the vehicle’s dual exhaust tips.
The new vehicle will be larger than the Equus; it stretches 204.9 inches long which is 8.4 inches longer than the Equus and has a wheelbase of 124.4 inches an increase of 5.9 inches from the Equus.
2017 Genesis G90 Interior
In order to give the German luxury machines a run for their money, the cabin is styled using the latest and most quality materials in the market. Italian leather is the standard upholstery material on the seats and the dash. Real wood is also featured extensively. Passengers will love its comfortable and luxurious seats. The driver’s seat is 22-way power adjustable. The dash is also mounted with a 12.3-inch touch-screen display which controls important information of the vehicle.
For convenience, occupants will be treated to a 3-zone automatic air conditioning, wireless phone charging while entertainment comes from a Lexicon premium acoustic system.
To compete with the other top ranging models, the G90 is further equipped with the most up-to-date safety features. They include blind spot monitoring, emergency braking featuring pedestrian detection, driver alertness, adaptive headlights, lane keep assist among others. In the domestic South Korea market, the G90 will be offered with a semi-autonomous highway mode but it is not clear if the function will be offered in the U.S and other international markets.
Engine Specs and Performance
There will be a total of three different engines under the hood of the 2017 Genesis G90. The base engine will be a 3.8 L, V-6 Engine rated at 311 hp and 293 lb-ft of torque.
The luxury sedan becomes the first Hyundai model to feature a twin-turbocharged engine. The unit is a 3.3 L, V-6 engine which produces 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. The engine helps the model run from 0-62 mph in 6.2 seconds.
Top-of-the range models will be equipped with a 5.0 L, V-8 engine capable of producing 420 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. This is the quickest engine propelling the sedan from 0-62 mph in 5.7 seconds. All engines will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission system that will send power to the front wheels as standard, AWD will be offered as an option though.
Price and release date
Hyundai has not announced the prices of the Genesis G90 as of this writing. However, the model is expected to cost cheaper than its German competitors to attract more customers.
The vehicle is showcased at the 2016 North American International Auto Show this month before going on sale later this year probably during the second quarter.
