The next generation of the highly successful QX50 has not yet been presented, or perhaps is in the form of the Infiniti QX Sport Inspiration Concept. Infiniti chose Beijing to launch their latest crossover concept for a reason. Crossovers have become the hottest cake in the automotive market. From the States, Europe and all the way to China, demand for these automobiles is growing exponentially. However, the Chinese market has a bigger appetite for them than anywhere else on this globe. As the country’s economy expands, more and more middle-class citizens are turning over to luxury crossovers as their preferred mode of transport. Those who cannot afford foreign crossovers turn to locally produced models. I tell you it is “crossover crazy” in China.
Back to Infiniti, their new Concept previews the future design language of Infiniti mid-size SUVs. The vehicle shows Infiniti’s daring design philosophy in the mid-size SUV segment. A sale of SUVs and crossovers is projected to grow by over 12% this year and the automaker plans to tap on this, as their models are quite popular in China. Despite China being an attractive market, Infiniti still keeps tabs on the North America which is Infiniti’s largest market.
Infiniti QX Sport Inspiration Concept Exterior
The new Infiniti QX Sport Inspiration Concept is an expression of power with a purpose. Infiniti Executive Design Director, Alfonso Albaisa reckons that the exterior bespeaks of “proportional clarity”. This clarity gives the vehicle a flowing look not common with traditional SUVs. The vehicle stretches 181.1 inches long, 74.8 inches wide and stands at a height of 64.9 inches. It has a wheelbase that spans 110.2 inches and a ground clearance of 9.1 inches. Its look is very muscular and is further enhanced by a wide stance and short overhangs which give it a coupe-like profile.
This exceptional design starts with a prominent double-arch grille which is flanked by a pair of LED headlights which look like human eyes. There are also large vertical air vents that channel cooling air to the brakes. To improve airflow, there are similar air vents at the rear which smoothens turbulent air as it exits from the belly of the vehicle.
On the sides, you will notice a great deal of character lines as well as a blacked out B-pillar. Flush door handles complete the attractive look of the vehicle. Its A-pillars are slim and look as if they are floating. Side-mounted rearview cameras are mounted on these pillars. At the back, the Infiniti QX Sport Inspiration Concept features a diffuser which is integrated with two exhaust outlets. The rear also features human eye-like LED taillight clusters that mimic the headlights. In addition, there is a subtle deck-lid spoiler.
Infiniti QX Sport Inspiration Concept Interior
The interior is also captivating just like the exterior. Once inside, one immediately notices its “floating seats”. The vehicle can accommodate five passengers comfortably but Infiniti is not building this vehicle to be a mass hauler rather an epitome of comfort, convenience and ultimate luxury. As such, the model accommodates only 4 passengers to give each passenger his/her own space.
The seats are wrapped in premium leather. At the front, there is a futuristic dash. The center stack features few buttons as most functions are operated via its huge central display screen. There are also steering wheel controls for its huge instruments display which is placed directly before the driver.
A two-tone theme is used throughout the cabin i.e. black which resembles body armor contrasted by bright white surfaces. Most of the features such as the center stack, armrest, cargo cover and lower part of the dash are wrapped in black saddle leather. The upper part of the dash is wrapped in white leather which extends the two- tone color theme of the cabin. Its flat-bottomed steering wheel, on the other hand, is wrapped in Nubuck leather while the headliner features ultra-suede leather. A silver contrast stitching is used to bond the black and white leather surfaces.
Overall, the dash is driver-centric, a feature enhanced by its climate controls embedded on the air vents while dial on the center console allow the driver to switch between drive modes. There are also metal paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Two monitors are mounted on the A-pillar to display live feed views from the rear-facing cameras which function as its side mirrors.
Engine Specs and performance
It is common to see automaker showcase concepts without disclosing the engines that drive them. This is such a case. However, based on the overall size of the model, our engineers believe that the concept could be hiding one of the three engines used in the 2017 Infiniti Q60 coupe.
The first probable engine is the 3.0 L unit which is tuned in two ways. The engine delivers 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque or 400 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. The concept could also be harboring the turbocharged 2.0 L, 4-cylinder engine that is rated at 208 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
The transmission system is also a mystery. Our engineers are of the view that the vehicle will use the same 7-speed automatic system offered on the Q60. A 6-speed manual gearbox is probable. The model will be offered in all-wheel drive.
Price and Release date
The Infiniti QX Sport Inspiration Concept looks very aggressive which might not be entirely reflected on the production model. However, as it is, the model looks ready for production. Since it is just a concept, the automaker didn’t release any information about its prices. Further, Infiniti didn’t say when a production model will hit dealerships but I hope it is soon.
