Just after KIA released teaser images of the upcoming 2017 Kia Cadenza, our spies caught the car undergoing testing but under heavy camouflage. The sedan which was launched in 2010 to replace the KIA Amanti was only introduced in the US in 2013 as a 2014 model year.
The car has posted good returns for the short time it has been in America and since the car is nearly at the end of its lifecycle, KIA is set to initiate a major overhaul on all its fronts. If the mules under testing are anything to go by, then we might see the 2017 KIA Cadenza earlier than anticipated probably in the first half of 2016.
2017 KIA Cadenza Exterior
The exterior design of the new 2017 KIA Cadenza will be extensively redesigned to conform to KIA’s ongoing design language.
The recent released renderings show that the Cadenza will have a slightly longer wheelbase, long hood, a huge tiger-nose grille flanked by aggressive headlamps and unique LED daytime running lights. The rear is sportier with larger taillights, huge exhaust tips and a bumper that is crisper looking than the outgoing model.
According to our spy shots, the vehicle seems to have a longer wheelbase and a rear overhang. Overall, the vehicle will have a lower and wide stance which improves its COG and feature sharper lines all over its body. It will also feature muscular fenders.
2017 KIA Cadenza Interior
As of this writing, there has been little if any information about the interior of this car as KIA has kept it a closely guarded secret. What we know is that the interior will receive a refresh to a more luxurious styling.
The cabin will be kept clean with few buttons and switches. It will be fitted with premium materials to up its standards of luxury in order to give the German machines that usually set the standards very high a run for their money. Nappa leather upholstery on seats and dashboard in the outgoing model is set to carry over to the new model. Due to the extended wheelbase rear passengers will enjoy increased leg room. We also expect the cargo space to slightly increase from the current’s 15.9 cubic feet, the rear seats will have a folding capability to help extend the cargo space further, a feature missing in the outgoing model which features a small opening when the center armrest is lowered.
We expect the 2017 KIA Cadenza to offer the latest technological features including Bluetooth connectivity, Smartphone integration, USB ports, Wi-Fi connectivity, a premium sound system and the latest infotainment system integrated with a large screen. Security wise, the 2017 Cadenza will be equipped with a package of driving aids which will include ABS, traction control, Lane keep assist and parking assist among others.
Engine Specs and Performance
Under the hood, we expect the Cadenza to feature the same engine as the outgoing model. However, the engine will be tweaked to provide more power. The 3.3 L, V-6 unit which delivers 293 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque will be upgraded to produce 340 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque.
The engine will also be paired with a new transmission which will be a 7-speed dual-clutch unit replacing the current 6-speed transmission. This combination will enable the vehicle to move quicker and with a better fuel economy.
Currently, the Cadenza returns 19 mpg, 28 mpg and 22mpg for city, highway and combined drives. The current car accelerates from 0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds which is likely to improve albeit slightly.
Price and release date
It is way early for the South Korean automaker to release any details on the 2017 KIA Cadenza’s price.
However, we don’t think KIA will significantly vary the price from the current model’s which starts at MSRP $ 33,815 inclusive of the destination charge for the base model and goes up to as much as $ 44,915 for the top SX Limited trim level. The vehicle will hit the market in 2016 probably in the second quarter.
The Chrysler 300 and the BMW 5 Series will be the 2017’s KIA Cadenza’s top competitors. However, the upcoming Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala and Nissan Maxima will also pose a threat to the Cadenza.
