Back in 1996 Mercedes launched the SLK lineup and around 20 years later, the automaker is set to rename the model that redefined the roadster. Back then, the SLK had introduced an innovative roof which offered comfort even in poor weather conditions.
The new models which will carry the SLC nametag will be released in the spring. Two trims will be offered, i.e. the 2017 Mercedes SLC 300 which will be the entry level model and the high-performance SLC43. Read on to find what to expect from the new SLC models.
2017 Mercedes SLC Exterior
The front look of the SLC features some notable differences compared to the SLK. It is sportier and makes the car look more aggressive. On the SLC 300, the grille is painted black with complementing chrome trim and silver louver. The sport package adds a diamond grille which is finished in chrome while the night package features the center louver in high-gloss black.
The grille is flanked by new headlights and LED DRLs which have been integrated in redesigned headlight housings. The new headlights look like eyelids. The hood resembles that of the SLK but the front grille design makes it appear as if to fold over the front making the hood and grille appear as a single piece.
The rear looks almost similar to that of the SLK but looks more stylish. The vehicle features LED taillights similar to those of the outgoing model but its review lights are placed at the bottom of taillight housings. Also, the large red section of the taillights has been replaced with a two slanted rectangles which serve as tail and brake lights. There is also an air vent at each corner. Its body wraps around each vent creating a 3D look.
The automaker has also added a reflector above each exhaust pipe. To complete the rear look is a simply designed diffuser with a chrome finish. The diffuser garnishes the lower side of the rear fascia and the inner parts of the exhaust pipes. The convertible also comes with the unique electrohydraulic vario-roof that opens and closes at speeds of up to 25 mph.
2017 Mercedes SLC Interior
Many people considered the interior of the SLK to be a bit cheap for a Mercedes but the SLC has changed that perception. To start with, the seats are wrapped in Nappa leather, are perforated and also feature contrast stitching. Platinum white and saddle brown are additional leather colors. The steering wheel is also perforated and wrapped in leather.
The 5.8-inch infotainment system on the SLK has been replaced with a 7-inch screen. Four-spoke vents surround the infotainment system; the vents are also placed at the corners of the dashboard. Other features include; Bluetooth connectivity, voice control, Smartphone integration, an SD card reader, two USB ports and a hard-drive which is used to store navigation data.
For safety, the SLC models are equipped with the automaker’s “Active Brake Assist”, a rearview camera, traction and stability control and cruise control. Other safety features include; LED headlights which adjust automatically according to lighting and diving conditions, lane keep assist and blind spot monitoring which are offered in an optional package for the SLC300 but come standard on the SLC43.
Engine Specs and performance
The revamped SLC lineup will be offered in two drive-trains just as the SLK it replaces. The SLC 300 will feature the same 2.0 L, 4-cylinder engine as the SLK250. This engine Pumps 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a 9G-Tronic automatic transmission system that sends power to the rear wheels. The model takes 5.7 seconds to move from 0-60 mph on the way to a 130 mph top speed.
For more power, buyers can opt for the more potent SLC43 which features a 3.0 L, V-6 that comes good with 362 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. This model is much quicker and runs from 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds.
Both feature Dynamic Select drive as standard. This system enables the driver to choose between its five different performance modes (Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, Eco and the customizable Individual mode). A sport exhaust is also offered as an option. The system allows the driver to vary exhaust sound as he/she deems fit.
Price and release date
The 2017 Mercedes SLC models will be availed in the spring of this year but the German automaker is yet to announce official prices. We don’t expect the prices of the new models to vary significantly from the SLK models.
As such the SLC 300 will cost around SLK250’s $ 43,950 while the SLC43 will attract a price tag of around $ 70,900 just like the SLK55 AMG.
As you would expect its top competitors are a trio of 3-German models BMW have their Z4 while Audi has the TT roadster. Porsche will also be involved in the mix with their Boxster Spider.
