Our spy photographers recently caught up with the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan prototype doing testing runs under minimal camouflage. Compared to the current model, the model we saw testing only features mild changes on its exterior profile. Read along to find out more about this range-topping luxury hauler from Mercedes:

The exterior will only feature mild changes. One of the new changes is the revised headlights which feature the automaker’s rendition of Multi-beam lights. The headlights also integrate sharper LED DRLs that feature three strips. The new lights allow the driver to leave the high beams permanently on.
While on the road, monitoring systems of the car will detect other road users and send signals to the LEDs which are individually controlled which in turn light up dark sections of the road. The bumper has also been revised and is integrated with new air intakes. The grille however is carried over unchanged.
The flanks also feature subtle changes including revised ORVMs along with new signal lights, a chrome strip that runs along the lower section of the car and new multi-spoke alloy wheels. The rear looks unchanged from the current S-Class.
2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Interior
Our spy photographers were lucky to get a glimpse of the upcoming S-Class cabin. The most notable change in the cabin is a new sport, 3-spoke steering wheel mounted with touch-sensitive buttons. The unit is adopted from the latest E-Class.
The cabin also features bigger a display screen without buttons between them, as is the case in the current models. The outgoing model’s rotary selector for the infotainment system has been replaced with a touchpad controller.
In addition, the model is also expected to feature electronic features similar to the one on the E-Class. Likely features will include a Drive Pilot semi-autonomous feature among others. The S-Class cabin will be better equipped than the E-Class to back up its status as the top luxurious sedan in the automaker’s lineup.
Engine and performance
It is too early to know the power trains the German automaker will use on the luxurious sedan. However, I am certain Mercedes will update the vehicle’s drive-trains. One thing I am sure of is that the 9-speed automatic transmission system will find its way to the model’s drive-train setup.
The automaker may retune the current engines to provide more power or could choose to hook up the model with new mills. Among the likely engines to be featured is the 4.0 L engine from the automaker’s AMG brand.
Price and release date
It is also too early to talk matters price. The model is likely to make a debut in the second half of next year. I expect the automaker slightly hike the price of the model to reflect the new changes.
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class goes one on one with the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and the Jaguar XJ. Models from traditionally non luxurious automakers are also catching up fast hence these automakers have to continually upgrade their models to remain a step ahead in this luxury sedan market.
