After a very long wait, nearly 4 decades, we are going to see a second-generation Mercedes G-Class also known in some markets as the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen. Since its initial debut in 1979, the G-Class has never been redesigned (talk of not fixing something that isn’t broken). For all those years, the iconic SUV has managed to put a good fight with its rivals.
However, with its rivals getting more and more modern, the G-Class had started to look obsolete and the redesign couldn’t have come at a better time. In fact, Mercedes was set to discontinue the lineup but strong demand from China, U.S. and Russia forced the automaker to do a turnaround after even launching final edition models of the SUV. The SUV will still feature its all-familiar boxy, body-on-frame look.
In addition, a car based version of the SUV dubbed ”Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class” will be offered later in 2019 to give the G-Class a compact and more efficient appeal. Further reports indicate that the military-spec G-Class will continue with minimal changes. Only the civilian model will undergo an extensive redesign. The new body will use aluminum to save weight and thus improve its performance and fuel economy. Read along for more on the 2019 Mercedes G-Class SUV:

The exterior design will largely remain the same since the automaker would not like to change the model’s iconic design. The new model comes with a near-vertical windshield, a side engine tailgate and an exterior-mounted spare-wheel.
Dimension-wise, the model is 4 inches wider than the outgoing version but its length and width remains unchanged. The SUV also features a cleaner underbody which helps improve its aerodynamics. Other new additions include adaptive LED headlights, blocked off air intakes and cameras to aid its new driver assistance technologies.

Due to the extended width, the dashboard will have to be extended. The instrument panel will be revised to feature prominent differential lock push buttons, two round dials and a high-mounted grab-handle.
The model will also be equipped with the COMAND infotainment system which features a touchpad, a larger monitor in the dash as well as a head-up display. There center stack will also be revised. There will also be a new steering wheel.
Its new electronic architecture will allow inclusion of the latest driver-assistance technologies and telematics. More information will be available close to its release date.
Engine Specs and performance
Stricter fuel emission regulations are one of the reasons for the redesign. The SUV is set to receive more fuel-efficient drive-trains. According to some rumors, the model will even feature a hybrid drive-train.
The lineup of engines will include the automaker’s new inline-6 diesel engines and a turbocharged 4.0 L, V-8 on the G550 and AMG G63. The top-of-the-range AMG G65 will likely feature a twin-turbocharged V-12. All engines will be mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission system but the current 7-speed automatic transmission may be retained on AMG models.
In the U.S., only the V-8 and V-12 will be offered due to stricter fuel economy regulations.
Price and release date
The 2019 Mercedes G-Class SUV is likely to make a public debut in late 2017 with sales starting in early 2018 as a 2019 model. The debut of the new model will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the G-Class nameplate.
As for the price, we don’t expect it to change significantly from that of the current model. Therefore, expect a starting price of around $120,000 for the G550.
Competition in this ultimate utility segment is not that stiff. Actually, the only worthy rival of the 2019 Mercedes G-Class will be the 2019 Land Rover Defender set to debut around the same time.
