Opel with Astra for decades is one of the biggest competitors to Volkswagen Golf. Will the new Opel / Vauxhall Astra K 2016 be better than Golf?
2016 Opel Astra K Exterior
Exterior-wise, 2016 Opel Astra K looks much sleeker and sharper. There is a new prominent character line which starts at the rear wings, extends over the door handles and ends at the front wheel arches. The prototype vehicle seemed to be sitting on a fresh set of alloy wheels. At the back, there’s a roof-mounted spoiler.
As for the body style, it’s a 5-door hatchback, perhaps a bit longer than the one of the current Astra.
Overall, at the front it looks similar to 2015 Buick Excelle, the edition made for the Chinese market (a close relative of the next Astra and the next Buick Verano). At the back, it’s expected to have a more chiseled look heavily influenced by Opel’s forward-looking 2013 Opel Monza concept. Next generation Opel / Vauxhall Astra will offer customers and headlights that are currently found only in a very luxurious cars, Opel is called “IntelliLux LED”. It is about Matrix LED technology lights that do not blind the driver from the opposite direction. It consists of eight LED segments that adapt to traffic ahead of the vehicle with the assistance of cameras.
Like the current Astra, the new one is expected to spawn several other variants including an Astra Sedan, Sports Tourer wagon and GTC coupe.
New Astra Interior
Interior of 2016 Opel Astra will be more spacious. It’s said to set standards in the compact class.
It will be the first Opel car to be launched with Opel OnStar’s connected service, there to help and rescue you 24/7, 365 days a year.
The thing that strikes the observer first is a drastically reduced number of controls for the new infotainment and air condition systems. The prototype also featured a painted lower console and a sleeker steering wheel.
Engine and Specs
2016 Opel Astra will borrow its D2XX platform from the China-spec Chevrolet Cruze, which is expected to reduce the weight by 100-220 pounds, just as much as was recommended upon the release of the previous (current) model. According to some reports, the latest Astra will be using an updated Watts setup.
New Opel Astra will be using 1.0-liter, 3-cylinders based engine in two forms – 66 kW and 85 kW powers. Both engines will produce 166 Nm of torque, enough to deliver around 1800 rpm to 4700 rpm. There are also plans for 1.2-liter, 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter turbocharged engines. Anyhow, 1.0 liter is a sure option available with manual gearbox, which later may be converted to automatic transmission. It will be able to accelerate 0-60 mph in 6 seconds. Plans include and the upgraded 1.6 and 2.0 diesel engines, with a range from 110 to 200 horsepower, paired with a six-speed manual and automatic transmission. Fuel consumption for petrol engines ranging from about 4 l / 100 km for the 1.0 liter engine, while the more powerful diesel engines consume about 3.7 liters / 100 km mixed driving.
Following the market launch, expect to see hybrid and high-performance OPC variants.
