Crossover SUVs are tearing into the minivan market with gusto; minivan automakers have had to invest more on the designs and features of their minivan brands to keep them relevant in the changing market. Despite this, GM is still going strong with their Opel Zafira MPV. The current model has been in the market for 5 years having been introduced in 2011. As such, the update couldn’t have come at a better time. The new 2017 Opel Zafira has received a bit of refresh both on its exterior profile as well as on the inside.
Rumor has it that its lineup of engines has also been modified for improved fuel efficiency and a better performance. The model is sold in Britain under the Vauxhall brand. Read along to find out more about the new Zafira facelift:
2017 Opel Zafira Exterior
The exterior profile features a number of upgrades. At the front, the model will have new headlights. It seems Opel has done away with the boomerang accenting which featured fog lights and turn signals in favor of the styling featured on the Corsa and Astra. The front bumper has also been slightly modified. The grille is also new. For the grille, Opel has replaced the honey-comb looking inserts with horizontal bars. The lower air dam has also been revised.
At the rear, the tailgate and taillights have not been altered. However, the bumper and quarter panel we saw on the testing mule were camouflaged which suggests they have been changed. Other features of the model remain including its large rear doors, tall greenhouse and compact dimensions that have made it a favorite in the MPV segment.
2017 Opel Zafira Interior
The model we captured doing testing was under camouflage and only little could be seen about its cabin. However, interior sources intimate that the Zafira will have a new dashboard with a modern layout. The center console and instrument panel has been redesigned. The new center console features a larger infotainment system screen with less buttons which results in a cleaner look.
The new infotainment system will support both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This adds to the model’s 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot which supports up to 7 mobile devices. The model will also feature the new OnStar service.
For safety, rumor has it that the automaker has added a forward collision alert with imminent braking, lane keep assist with lane change warning as well as a Following Distance Indication system.
Just like the outgoing model, the new Zafira will accommodate 7 passengers and its high functionality will remain. It is believed that the new cabin will feature 3 separate seats in the second row. Some models will however offer a second-row center console which will reduce seating capacity to 6 passengers.
Engine Specs and performance
As of this writing, there has been no concrete information about the lineup of Zafira engines. From the rumors, the base model will be a 1.4 L. EcoFlex LPG capable of 138 hp. Another engine that will be on offer is a 1.6 L, 4-cylinder engine which is capable of 150 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque. The base diesel engine is rumored to be a 1.6 L mill which produces 134 hp.
These are all rumors, but one thing is sure though, the model will come with many alternatives. Currently, the Zafira is offered in 3 petrol engines, two diesel engines with the larger diesel mill further tuned into five different flavors. The current model also offers an LPG as well as a CNG burning mill. All engines are 4-cylinder units and are transversely mounted. I expect a similar lineup for the 2017 Opel Zafira.
All the engines will be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard; a 6-speed automatic transmission system is offered as an option.
Price and release date
Opel has not revealed the prices of the upcoming Opel Zafira 2017 as of this writing. However, I don’t believe prices will change much from those of the outgoing model which starts at $ 34,414 (€31,595). The model will be released to dealerships this fall.
Mazda and Ford are Opel’s top rivals in this MPV segment. As such, the Opel Zafira will do battle with the Ford S-Max and the Mazda 5.
