2017 Porsche 911 Carrera Interior

Inside the 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera will feature some modern tweaks. Most interior changes are technology based as opposed to the layout. The new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system which is integrated with an online navigation module is the first thing that catches one’s eye. The PCM features a 7-inch display screen which enables the system to be operated with the use of gestures and handwritten user inputs as if it were a Smartphone.

Other new tech’ features include Wi-Fi connectivity and Apple CarPlay for iPhones. The PCM has also been integrated with Google Earth and Google Streetview which are new to the Carrera 911. The new instruments cluster also come with enhanced graphics. The steering wheel has been modified on the Sport chrono package where a mode switch has been added. The switch which is adopted from the 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder features a rotary dial featuring 4-driving modes which are Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual. Otherwise, other features remain untouched which include premium material upholstery. There is an option for a customized cockpit.

Engine Specs and Performance

Under the hood is where the Carrera has received the most changes. The base Carrera and the S model have done away with their 3.4 and 3.8 naturally aspirated engines and replaced them with a new turbocharged 3.0 L V 6 unit which features a unique exhaust  system, modified compressor wheels and a redesigned engine management system.

The new engine produces 370 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque for the Carrera and 420 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque for the Carrera S. This is an improvement of 20 hp and 43 lb-ft of torque on both models. The engine is mated to either a 7-speed manual transmission or a PDK transmission. With a manual transmission, the vehicle hits 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds and achieves a top speed of 183 mph. with the PDK, it makes the 0-60 mph run in 4.2 seconds.

The Sports Chrono package takes it down further to 4.0 seconds with PDK and attains 182 mph top speed.  On the other hand, the Carrera S makes the 0-60 mph run in4.1 seconds and attains a top speed of 191 mph.  With the PDK, the Carrera S makes the same run in 3.9 seconds and cuts it to 3.7 seconds with the Sport Chrono package which reaches 190 mph.

Though EPA ratings are not yet out, Porsche has said that the engines are about 12% more efficient. As such, the vehicle could return 22mpg, 30 mpg and 25 mpg on city, highway and combined drives respectively. The engine has a redline of 7,500 rpm which is pretty impressive for a turbocharged power-train. Its torque kicks in from 1,700 rpm up to 5,000 rpm.
