After giving the 991.2-generation a refresh, it was only a matter of time before Porsche updated the 911 line-up. The 2017 Porsche 911 Targa 4 however come with subtle changes as Porsche likes to keep their excellent 911 design largely unchanged.
2017 Porsche 911 Targa 4 Exterior
The outer profile comes unchanged from that of the outgoing model except for some mild tweaks here and there. At the front the Targa features smoother air intakes and slimmer 4-point daytime running lights. The vehicle also features redesigned headlights.
On the sides, there are no recess covers on the door handle which has led to a cleaner look. At the back, the vehicle features a new decklid featuring vertical louvers as opposed to horizontal design on the outgoing model. The rear also features redesigned 4-point taillights linked by a single 3D light strip. The light strip illuminates the rear as well as accentuate the vehicles broader dimensions.
To complete the unique Targa look is the signature open top soft roof which seems to wrap around the rear glass as well as feature the silver Targa-bar B-pillars. The roofline is more appealing than the topless Cabriolet. The roof panel is operated via the touch of a button and when opened, the roof is hidden behind the vehicle’s rear seats.
2017 Porsche 911 Targa 4 Interior
Just like the exterior, the interior is a carryover of the outgoing model with minimal changes. The cabin features well-bolstered seats upholstered in premium leather, A 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel, a center console with numerous buttons, premium materials and a tachometer which is mounted at the center of the gauge pod.
Most updates are found on the Porsche Communication infotainment system which is offered as standard. It features a 7-inch multi-touch screen and a navigation system which allows hand-written inputs. The system is offered with a one year free subscription for Google Street View, internet radio, real-time traffic updates and remote data retrieval. The vehicle will also feature Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity enables Smartphone integration.
The new 2017 Porsche 911 Targa 4 borrows much from the 918 Spyder features such as the steering wheel. The standard steering wheel measures 14.76 inches while the optional GT Sport steering wheel measures 14.17 inches. The vehicle is also equipped with a hydraulic feature which helps increase the front ground clearance by 1.57 inches via the push of a button. This enables the Targa to navigate angled roads and speed bumps with ease without damaging its chin.
Engine Specs and Performance
Under the hood, the 2017 Porsche 911 Targa 4 and 4S feature a new 3.0 L, V6 engine. Though the new engine comes with a smaller displacement than the outgoing model, the automaker has added two turbochargers that compensate for the lost displacement resulting in more power and torque as well as a 12% better efficiency.
The Targa 4 which is the base model will deliver 370 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the 4S which comes with a new exhaust and a modified compressor coupled with a new engine tuning comes good with 420 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. Both models will feature a 7-speed manual transmission system as standard with an option for the automaker’s 7-speed dual-clutch PDK.

The Targas are normally offered in AWD. With a manual transmission, the Targa 4 makes the 0-60 mph run in 4.5 seconds, adding a PDK cuts 0.2 seconds. With the individual mode, you can customize various settings such as PDK transmission, suspension and exhaust among others. With this package, the Targa 4 accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds. The Targa 4 has a top speed of 179 mph. On the other hand, the more potent Targa 4S with a manual transmission makes the 0-60 mph dash in 4.2 seconds and 4 seconds flat with addition of the PDK.
