2016 Scion iM

Falling a bit short of the expectations enthusiasts had, Scion has revealed a vehicle that’s only remotely spicier than the vehicle it was based on – Toyota Auris. Thus, Scion has shown its iM production toning down.

The 2016 Scion iM exterior designers combined a trapezoidal lower grille opening, LED daytime running lights and gloss-black fascia features with Toyota’s Angry Birds grille-headlight treatment. The intention of the creators was to make it look hot and hatchy.

The hatchback body perhaps relies too much on the aero kit and the 17” wheels. In the making process, the vehicle lost some of the sleek attractiveness and appeal of its European relative – the iA sedan.

The front part received a more aggressive look – the angular grille and larger lower grilles and intakes accommodate hexagonal inserts and gloss-black accents. 17” alloy wheels, wrapped in low-profile “fat” tires, come standard.

The rear bumper sits under a dominant set of tail lamps and a tiny rear window.

It could be easily said that the interior is the highlight of the  Scion iM 2016. It looks really amazing.

As for the standard features, there are padded lower dash panels, a contoured leather-wrapped steering wheel, power windows and locks, power folding mirrors, cruise control, dual-zone automatic A/C, a Pioneer audio system with seven-inch touch screen, and a backup camera.

The extras include a navigation upgrade kit, cargo-area addenda, and a line of TRD performance accessories, including an anti-roll bar, a cold-air intake, and lowering springs. Pet-friendliness is encouraged by Scion through the door guards, a tether, a seat pet barrier and “a grass pad” (keeps the dog away from the center console).

Engine Specs and performance

The 2016 Scion iM will be powered by Toyota’s 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder gasoline engine producing 137 hp, the sam one found in the Corolla Eco model. It features a continuously variable transmission with 7-step shifting and a Sport mode which will adjust the behavior of the transmission and make use of Scion’s G Al-Shift technology (a software that factors in lateral G-forces to keep the CVT from shifting mid-corner). Scion also offers an optional 6-speed manual gearbox with hill start assist. It is estimated that the new Scion iM accelerate from 0-60 mph in 9.5 sec, with a top speed of 115 mph.

Since it’s based on the same platform as the tC, it’s got respectable bones for a front-wheel driver.

The vehicle should achieve 37 mpg on highway.

Price and release date

The New Scion iM was unveiled in conceptual form a few months ago at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show and debuted in New York on March 31, 2015. The vehicle should hit the market in the fall this year with price starting at about $20,000.
