The Skoda Fabia is a very important car to the Czech’s Volkswagen’s wholly owned subsidiary. It is the second-best selling Skoda model in the UK after the Octavia. The new model will be based on the MQB platform which features on most of VW vehicles.
The new 2016 Skoda Fabia model will be smaller than the outgoing model since the predecessor long narrow shape was not well received in the market. The new model looks sleeker and more attractive than the outgoing one. The model still remains the only light car in the market that is offered both as a hatchback and as a wagon.
2016 Skoda Fabia Exterior
The exterior of the Fabia is restyled to feature a more modern look. At the front, the grille has been refreshed and is surrounded by a chromed frame. The engine hood is also redesigned and features the company logo. The front bumper and the rear one are body colored.
The headlights and taillights have also been redesigned and feature LED lighting. The 4-door vehicle will weigh between 2326 lbs and 2568 lbs. It has a length of 157.2 inches, 61.8-inch width and stands at 57.8 inches. It has a wheelbase of 97.2 inches.
The low trims will ride on 15-inch wheels, 16-inch wheels for mid trim levels while top trims will ride on 17-inch aluminum wheels.
2016 Skoda Fabia Interior
On the inside, the new Fabia’s interior has been greatly transformed compared to the predecessor model. Every Fabia will get a touch-screen but they will vary in sizes. The base trim will feature a 5-inch screen while the top trim will be equipped with a 6.5 –inch touch-screen infotainment system. The system features Smartlink which is the automakers Smartphone mirroring technology.
The interior is a clever design seen in most of the cabins of other Skoda cars. The cabin has plenty of storage places such as twin map pockets on the back of front seats, mesh pockets on the sides, door pockets, bottle holders and rubbish bins and small cup holders at the front for the driver and front passenger. The seats are upholstered in quality cloth with higher trims featuring center armrests. The cabin will accommodate five passengers.
The cabin of both the wagon and the hatchback offers plenty of cargo space. The wagon has a 505 L which is expanded to 1,370 L by folding the rear seats. On the other hand, the hatchback has a 305 L cargo space with seats up and 1,125 L with the seats folded.
Engine Specs and Performance
The 2016 Skoda Fabia features the same engine as the outgoing model but the new one has been tuned to deliver two levels of output. All Fabia engines are duly Euro 2-compliant and all come with a top-start capability and brake energy recuperation.
The entry level models feature a turbocharged 1.2 L, 4-cylinder engine rated at 66kW which, the reason for its 66TSI nametag. This output is achieved between 4,400 rpm and 5,400 rpm. The engine also produces 160 Nm of torque from as low as 1,400 rpm up to 3,500 rpm. This power output presents a 3Kw and 28 Nm improvement from its predecessor’s 1.4 L MPI engine.
The engine is also more fuel efficient at 88 mpg compared to the previous engine’s 83 mpg. The engine is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The same engine is tuned to produce 81kW at between 4,600 rpm and 5,600 rpm and 175 Nm of torque at between 1,400 rpm and 4,000 rpm.
The model which is named 81TSI to reflect its output is paired with a 7-speed DSSG dual-clutch automatic transmission system.
Price and release date
The entry level Skoda Fabia 66TSI manual version of the hatchback starts at $ 15,990. The entry level wagon is more costly and starts at $ 1,150 more at $ 17,140 which is lower than most of its European light-car competitors.
On the other hand, the only automatic 81 TSI DSG has a premium of $ 4,300 over the base 66 TSI manual version. It starts at $ 21,290 for the hatchback and still an extra $1,150 for the wagon.
