The name says it all; the 2016 Skoda Superb is something special according to the automaker. With such a nametag, there is basically little or no room for error. The automaker’s flagship model, now entering its third generation embodies the company’s ambitions.
As such, miscalculation at this level would translate into ridicule. Even though the pressure was immense, the Czech-based VW subsidiary has managed to deliver a really “superb’ machine on 4 wheels.
2016 Skoda Superb Exterior
The new model will be offered in five trim levels which are the entry S, mid level SE and SE Business and top levels SE L Executive and Laurin & Klement. The Superb just like with other recent Skoda and Volkswagen cars is based on the MQB architecture.
The vehicle stretches 486.1 cm long, 146.8 cm wide and has a height of 186.4 cm. This means the vehicle is 4.7 cm wider and 2.8 cm longer than the outgoing model. Its wheelbase is also 80 mm longer. To give justice to its nametag, Skoda has carefully designed the Superb.
From a distance, the 2016 Skoda Superb in fact looks like an Audi sedan. At the front, the vehicle is dominated by a large chromed grille flanked by headlights featuring projector lights and LED DRLs. On the sides, the vehicle features a high waistline that stretches all the way to the rear and has a glass house that resembles that of the Octavia. At the rear, the vehicle features LED taillights, a boot lid spoiler and sharper edges as well as a modified bumper.
The base model rides on 16-inch alloy wheels, 17-inch for the SE trim and 18-inch alloy wheels for higher trims.
2016 Skoda Superb Interior
On the inside, you will find a modified interior which has a larger cabin space compared to the outgoing model. The cabin is well laid out. Passengers will experience plenty of head and legroom and still plenty of cargo space i.e. 625 L which increases to 1,760 when the rear seats are folded down.
The trunk is operated by a Virtual pedal which allows one to open it by just waving your foot under the rear bumper. You will find a similar system on the Ford Kuga and VW Passat.
There are a host of storage compartments including a front and rear door pockets, cup-holders, storage nets as well as a storage compartment for a tablet in the front armrest. The base S trim comes with a 6.5-inch touch-screen with Bluetooth connectivity, a DAB digital radio, air conditioning and a leather wrapped steering wheel.

The top L$K trim offers premium luxury including a 3-zone climate control, heated rear seats, a Canton audio system and a number of driver-assist systems like parking assist and lane-keeping assist.
For the 2016 model year, the 3.6 L, V-6 engine whose models were slow selling has been dropped. But still, there remain plenty of drive-trains, 7 in total.
There are 4 turbocharged gasoline engines and 3 turbocharged diesel drive-trains. The base 1.6 L diesel engine delivers 118 hp while the top 2.0 L gasoline engine pumps 276 hp. These engines will have a 30% better fuel efficiency compared to the outgoing models. The lineup also includes a 1.6 L Greenline diesel engine which comes with a tax-exemption due to its excellent CO2 emissions of less than 100 g/km.
The automaker claims that this engine has a fuel economy of 76.4 mpg. Most engines will be offered in FWD with only select models featuring AWD and automatic DSG transmission system. The lineup will also feature a plug-in hybrid in the near future according to Skoda.
Price and release date
The base model will have a starting price of around $ 30,000. The model was scheduled to go on sale before the end of this year. So some markets might still get lucky and get the model before the year ends but most will receive the model early next year.
In addition to competing with the traditional rivals such as the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Volkswagen Passat, Honda has set it target on the more posh brands like the Lexus ES and Hyundai Genesis.
