2017 Skoda Octavia

The Octavia is the most important car for Skoda. The car is actually solely responsible for reviving fortunes of the automaker. The new 2017 Skoda Octavia is offered in wagon, hatchback and sedan body styles. However, only the wagon and sedan have received mid-cycle refresh for the 2017 model year.  Being just a refresh, both the exterior and interior have received minor updates meant to help the model continue with its strong showing in the market. The automaker has also updated the safety features as well as the model’s drivetrain. Read along for more information:

2017 Skoda Octavia Exterior

It is not common for automakers to alter the exterior features of a model during a facelift. Such is mostly common during mid-cycle refresh. However, Skoda has actually given the Octavia a comprehensive exterior redesign.

The new revisions are visible at the front where the model features thick chrome on the center piece of the grille which splits the grille’s vertical slats into two. The grille is also flanked by revised headlights which feature a split design. The model also features two distinct clusters on either side of the grille. In addition, two other narrower lights flank the grille resulting in a wider look for the front fascia. The lights feature LED lighting. The model also comes with a modified bumper which is also split horizontally by a new chrome strip for a sportier look than the outgoing model. The engine hood is also revised and now features sharper creases towards the fenders.

The flanks of both the wagon and the sedan are unchanged. The only change on the flanks is the addition of new wheel designs for its alloy wheels whose size ranges from 16 inches to 18 inches. The rear of both models is unchanged except for the new LED taillight clusters.

Safety features have also been revised. To start with, the automaker has optimized the model’s parking assistant. The new model also adds predictive pedestrian protection, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert, lane change alert and a rear view camera.

2017 Skoda Octavia Interior

The cabin is largely unchanged compared the outgoing model. The automaker has however added some new technological features to hook it up with modernity.  Starting of the new additions is a new infotainment system standard on all trims (Bolero, Amundsen and the top Columbus) just like the outgoing models. All the three trims have capacitive touch displays with the top Columbus trim featuring a 9.2-inch system with a WLAN hotspot as well as an option for a SIM card module that allows for LTE speed for fast internet connectivity.

The infotainment features are split into Infotainment Online and CareConnect.  The models also come with a trailer assistant feature which aids steering when the vehicle is reversing slowly. In addition, buyers will have an option for a heated steering wheel as well as a customizable key that enables drivers to save their individual vehicle settings. The wagon adds an option for a removable torch in its trunk and an electric tailgate.

Trunk space is unchanged. The sedan still offers 20.8 cubic feet of cargo. The wagon on the other hand offers 2.5 cubic feet of cargo space.  This space expands to 55.8 cubic feet and 61.4 cubic feet for the sedan and wagon respectively upon folding of the rear seats.

Engine Specs and performance

The new 2017 Skoda Octavia is powered by four different mills. The base engine is a turbocharged 1.0 L, gasoline mill good for 113 horses. Next up petrol mill is a turbocharged 1.4 L, 4-cylinder engine which produces 148 horses.

Moving over to the diesel mills, the base unit is a 1.6 L engine which produces 113 horses. The most potent diesel mill is a 2.0 L unit good for 148 horses. As the figure indicates the diesel mill offer the same level of output as the gasoline ones but expect the former to offer more torque.

In addition, Skoda offers a Dynamic Chassis Control that enables drivers to change damping and steering settings to either Comfort, Normal or Sport modes.

Price and release date

During the launch, Skoda did not announce official prices of the models. However, in this segment, a slight price change could have adverse effect on sales. Therefore, I don’t expect the model’s price to vary significantly from the current prices.

Currently, the sedan starts at $21,190 while the wagon has an MSRP of $22,430. Sales commence this third quarter with deliveries starting early next year.
