Just as we had expected, Subaru followed up the release of the 5-door Subaru Impreza hatchback concept in Tokyo Auto Show with the debut of the 4-door sedan concept in the ongoing LA Auto Show.
This comes just four years after the third generation of the Impreza made its debut. The two models share a lot of design cues; however, the sedan has a unique profile that makes it stand out more than the hatchback.
Subaru Impreza sedan Exterior
The new Subaru Impreza sedan will be the first vehicle based on the next-generation modular platform. Compared to its close competitors, the Impreza sedan concept remains smaller dimension wise. At 105.1 inches, the vehicle’s wheelbase is an inch longer than the current model but smaller than the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. Its 70.0 inches width is narrower than the Corolla, Civic and Mazda 3 which are some of its close competitors. The sedan stands at 57.2 inches.
As said earlier, the sedan and the hatchback share numerous styling cues. At the front, the vehicles look identical. The sedan’s red color brings out its body lines. The front fascia extends around the fog lamps which creates a concealed air vent just close to the lights and makes the lights look as if they sit deep inside the fascia. The headlights are C-shaped which makes them appear glowing even when the lights are turned off.
The rear features a small window which adds a dose of sportiness to the gentle slope shape of the rear. Its decklid is indented which creates a small lip spoiler look. Just as the headlights, the taillights are C-shaped but it is as if they won’t use LED lighting. Overall, the rear fascia is smooth with soft body lines which wrap around the lower side of the taillights. There is also another line below the deck lid which wraps around the fascia and ends with a sharp point just before the rear wheel wells.
The rear fascia also features a rear diffuser integrated with a single exhaust pipe on the passenger side. The Subaru Impreza sedan Concept rides on 19-inch wheels wrapped in Ruby Red Metallic accents.
Subaru Impreza sedan Interior
The interior of the sedan is still a mystery and the automaker has still remained mum about its specs. All the windows including the windshield of the concept being showcased at the Los Angeles Auto Show have been blacked out to keep the interior a secret.
This could mean that the automaker has not finalized the concept’s interior or that that there are design cues and technology the automaker does not want to reveal at this moment. We will update you on the design cues when we have more information.
Just like the interior, what Subaru has fitted under the hood of the Impreza sedan concept is still a mystery. However, there is a high likelihood that Subaru will go with one of their latest flat-four engines. What is clear though is that the vehicle will feature the automaker’s Symmetrical All-wheel Drive system. Whichever drivetrain the company chooses, it will certainly improve on the current model’s 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque.
We expect the new Impreza to up these figures close to 200 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. The current Lineartronic CVT transmission system is likely to be carried over to the new model. The automaker could still use a 5-speed or 6-speed manual transmission system as an option.
Price and release date
Being a concept, there are no release date or price details to talk about. However, rumor has it that the model will go into production soon and that the sedan could be produced in time for the 2018 model year. We hope Subaru will maintain the styling cues of the concept since many manufacturers showcase excellent designs only to release a production model that falls short of its concept design.
