2016 Toyota HiLux Review

Toyota has finally unveiled the eighth version of its most popular Hilux truck. The manufacturer has enhanced the ruggedness and performance typical of the Hilux, and has also paid more attention to the comfort of the passengers and driver-friendly features.

Exterior-wise, the latest version of the Toyota Hilux has been entirely reworked, now looking way more upscale in comparison to the previous generation. The exterior includes lots of chrome accents, LED-encrusted head lamps, as well as more cohesive overall design.

The well-known Toyota’s tradition of the high-riding, utilitarian pickup has been retained. The long wheelbase and short overhangs provide superb approach and departure angles.

The vehicle will be available in several trims, cab configurations and bed lengths.

As before, the Hilux offers the chrome roll bar at the front of the bed, for appearances only though. The big block Toyota lettering across the tailgate is also optional.

The 2016 Toyota Hilux sits on an all-new frame that comes with fully boxed rails and larger cross members. The suspension has been updated by upgrading the shock absorbers up front and improving the leaf spring setup out back.

2016 Toyota HiLux Interior

The most notable updates have been made in the interior. The new Toyota Hilux 2016 now has a sophisticated cabin with a thin, horizontally shaped dashboard, slightly reminiscent of the U.S.-spec Corolla.

Black color prevails, but brushed aluminum trim as well as unique stitching on the cushions brighten up the cabin. The steering wheel has received plenty of controls and the gauge cluster is clutter-free and easy to read.

As for the infotainment part, the vehicle has a new infotainment screen with haptic feedback controls. The user-friendly HVAC controls have been placed below the main screen and consist of two knobs for fan speed and temperature, having simple buttons for the main functions. Below them sits a “box” of switches, reserved for the options individual customers order.

As per usual, the Hilux offers an electronic locking rear differential for getting through the tough stuff.

Engine Specs and performance

The new 2016 Toyota Hilux is available with 4 engine options: 2 turbodiesel and 2 naturally aspirated gasoline mills.

First comes the 2.8-liter turbodiesel with an output of 174 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque, with this engine reaches a top speed of 115 mph, and acceleration of 0-60 mph in 9.5 sec.

For those wanting a smaller diesel, there is the 2.4-liter turbodiesel putting out 160 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

First of the gasoline engines is a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine delivering 164 horsepower. The second is a 4.0-liter V-6 producing 278 horsepower.

Coupled with the engines is a pair of transmissions. The standard transmission is a 6-speed manual transmission, also including the world’s first, truck-based rev matching technology Toyota has branded the transmission i-MT. A 6-speed automatic transmission is also available.
