2016 Volkswagen Golf 7

The 2016 Volkswagen Golf comes largely unchanged from the 2015 model. The vehicle which offers European-inspired interior design, safety and handling features a few tweaks here and there that makes even the base Golf more polished and fun to drive. It comes in a number of trims and engines to choose from.

2016 Volkswagen Golf Exterior

The exterior look of the new 2016 VW Golf is easily recognizable. Its exterior has been carefully styled and features new profile lines that begin at the base of the hood. The hood itself has been redesigned and looks steeper.

The front also features a new horizontal grille flanked on both sides by new, sharp headlight clusters. The distinctive pillars which have been a common feature since earlier Golfs remain and add to the familiar Golf look. To improve its COG and stability, the new Golf sits low to the ground.

While other trims are offered in a choice of either 2 or 4 doors, the Golf R and e-Golf are offered as 4-door hatchbacks only while the GTI is offered in 2-doors only. Overall, the Golf looks more muscular.

The interior is business-like and accommodates five passengers. The overall dash has been redesigned and looks more stylish with the center stack moved towards the driver.

In front of the driver is an instruments cluster, a 6.5-inch display screen at the center of the dash (the TSI features a 5-inch touch-screen). The dash features two-tone upholstery. All models are hooked up with VW’s MIB II infotainment system which comes along with USB ports. The TSI gets Bluetooth streaming, an 8-speaker stereo, USB connectivity, 60/40-split folding rear seat and a color touch-screen. The TSI is the only golf without a rear-view camera.


The S features a steering wheel mounted with controls, a rear-view mirror, SiriusXM satellite radio and VW Car-Net. The S trim is offered in TDI form. The gasoline 4-door of the TDI has a panoramic sunroof. The SE adds an 8-speaker audio system, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof and leather upholstery. The trim has additional options such as the enhanced adaptive Driver Assistance Package.

The top trim SEL packs a dual-zone climate control, touch-screen navigation, a power driver’s seat and the driver Assistance Package on top of SE features The Golf also offers plenty of cargo space. It offers 22.8 cubic feet of cargo space which goes up to 52.7 cubic feet when the rear sets are folded. For safety purposes all Golf models feature autonomous barking and traction control.

Engine Specs and Performance

The 2016 Volkswagen Golf features a number of engines. The base unit on the Golf TSI is a 1.8 L direct-injected turbocharged, 4-cylinder unit good for 170 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm and 200 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm. Its EPA rated at 25/37 mpg city/highway for the manual, 25/36 mpg for the automatic.

There is also the 2.0 L turbocharged inline-4 (GTI) which comes good with 210 hp at 4,500 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque at 1,500 rpm. Its performance package adds 10 hp at 4,700 rpm. The engine is EPA rated at 25/34 mpg city/highway with the manual and 25/33 mpg city/highway with the automatic.

The next power-train option is the 2.0 L turbocharged diesel inline-4 (TDI) which produces 150 hp at 3,500 rpm and 236 lb-ft of torque at 1,750 rpm.  Its EPA rated at 30/45 mpg city/highway for the manual and 31/43 mpg city/highway for the automatic.

The last conventional engine is the 2.0 L turbocharged inline-4 on the Golf R good for 292 hp at 5,400 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque at 1,800 rpm. The engine is EPA rated at 22/31 mpg city/highway for the manual and 23/30 mpg for the automatic. The gas engines are paired with either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission while the diesel engines are mated with a 6-speed manual or the DSG automatic system.

Lastly, there is the e-Golf which is fitted with a full electric drive-train. The unit features a permanent-magnet AC motor that delivers 115 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque. The electric unit is capable of moving the Golf from 0-60 mph in 10 seconds and attains a top speed of 87 mph. The e-Golf has a range of 83 miles.


Price and release date

VW has competitively priced the Golf lineup to compete with other compact cars in its class. The base Golf has a MSRP of $ 19,315 inclusive of destination charges which is almost the same value as the base KIA Forte and other rival brands.

Moving up the trims, the S trim has a starting price of $ 20,395 for the 2-door hatchback and $ 20,995 for the 4-door variant. SE trim models have a starting price of $ 26,045 while the top trim SEL has a $28,215 price tag. If you want diesel versions, you will have to add $ 1,000 more.


The sporty GTI attracts a $ 25,815 price tag and additional options push the price to $ 33,550. The 4-door Golf R has a starting price of $ 38,000 while the green hatchback e –Golf costs around $ 36,000. The Golf is set to be released to dealer showrooms any time now so you can get yourself an early Christmas gift. Next-generation VW Golf is scheduled for 2018.
