2017 Volvo V90

Fans of luxurious wagons are set to get a new addition set to unsettle the likes of Mercedes, Audi, Jaguar, BMW and Cadillac wagons. Volvo, the Swedish automaker is set to bring back the Volvo V90 which it discontinued in 1998 after only two years on the market.

When it debuts, the new V90 will be positioned as Volvo’s flagship wagon. The vehicle is set to be unveiled on February 18th but its leaked designs have already surfaced on the internet.  The new wagon is based on Volvo’s scalable Production Architecture (SPA) platform which underpins the S90 and the XC90 SUV. This practically means the wagon will most likely feature similar drive-trains as the S90 sedan which in turn borrowed its power-trains from the XC90.

The V90 will borrow most of its design cues from the S90 sedan and will get an identical interior. However, due to its stretched body, the wagon will have a different rear and a more practical cabin with extra cargo space.

It’s however unfortunate that the model was leaked days before the automakers scheduled release at a special event on February 18th. This means it won’t be a surprise to the automotive world as Volvo would have hoped.

2017 Volvo V90 Exterior

If you have seen the new S90, then you have seen more than half of the 2017 Volvo V90. The two cars are identical from the nose to the B-pillars. The only physical difference between the two vehicles is on their rear fascias. The front end is as elegant as that of the sedan. It features a large grille accentuated by large and chromed vertical slats. The grille is flanked by swept-back headlights and LED DRLs which look like the Thor’s hammer.

At the back, the wagon features a unique design that makes it stand out from the sedan. It features a roof-mounted spoiler. It also features hockey-stick-shaped taillights which are borrowed from the Concept Estate shooting brake which we saw at the Geneva Auto Show two years ago. The taillights climb up the C-pillar exhibiting a finesse that goes on to show the excellent craftsmanship of its designers.

The 2017 Volvo V90 will ride on 20-inch R-Design wheels as standard but there will be an option for 21-inch wheels just like with the sedan.

Overall, the automaker dropped the boxy design in preference of a sportier roof section that also features a raked rear windscreen.

2017 Volvo V90 Interior

The S90 sedan is Volvo’s most luxurious model yet. Therefore, expect the wagon to be as luxurious since it adopts the S90 cabin styling cues.

The wagon’s cabin provides adequate space to hold five passengers and still leave plenty of cargo space. The rear seat has a 60/40 split folding capability which enables expansion of cargo space when needed. Many buyers will love the wagon’s state-of-the-art infotainment system which integrates the vehicle’s connectivity, navigation and entertainment functions.

The infotainment system is controlled via a 12.0-inch tablet-like touch-screen display which occupies the larger part of the center console. The dashboard also features large wood inserts and vertical A/C vents which flank the tablet-like screen. The cabin also features numerous soft-touch surfaces and an excellent fitting which result in a premium look and feel. The cabin is fancy even when compared with the likes of Mercedes-Benz and Audi rivals.

Just like the S90, the V90 seats will be upholstered in Nappa leather. The front seats are heated, ventilated and power adjustable while the rear seats are only heated.

For safety, the Volvo V90 will feature stability and traction control, Park Assist Pilot, ABS, Cross Traffic Alert, Blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning and enhanced airbags among others.

Engine Specs and Performance

The new Volvo V90 2017 will likely be powered by the same engines as the S90 and the XC90. The automaker has already confirmed that all units available for the SUV will also be featured on the sedan meaning the wagon will feature two petrol engines, two diesel engines and a hybrid drive-train.

The base petrol engine is a turbocharged 2.0 L engine known as the T5. The engine is good for 240hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The second petrol engine, the T6 adds a supercharger to boost output to 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

There will also be a plug-in hybrid. The drive-train also referred to as the T8 combines the turbocharged and supercharged T6 engine with an electric motor. The combination produces 410 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque. The engine will have a 27 miles range on electric power only just as with the XC90. The engines will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission system for models in the US.

Those will be the only engines offered in the US. In Europe, the Volvo will feature two diesel engines which are the D4 which produces 190 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and the D5 which is good for 225 hp and 246 lb-ft of torque.

Price and release date

In an official statement, Volvo confirmed that the model would be unveiled at a special event in Stockholm, Sweden before making a public debut at the upcoming Geneva Auto Show which runs from 3rd to 13th March 2016.

As for the price, the Volvo wagon is likely to carry a slightly higher price tag than its S90 sedan sister which starts at $ 46,000. The V90 could start at around MSRP $ 48,000. We expect the automaker to announce its pricing details during its launch.

Competition

When the 2017 Volvo V90 wagon comes out, it will give the likes of Mercedes Benz E-Class, Audi A6 Avant, Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon, BMW 5-Series Touring and Jaguar XF Sportbrake a run for their money.

In all regards, the 2017 Volvo V90 is an excellent piece of art, one that even critics will admire and smile at. Therefore, all the competitors must be braced for a tough battle.
