The 2015 Subaru BRZ is a sporty, fun-to-drive, four-seat compact coupe available in three trim levels: Premium, Limited and Series.Blue.
The 2015 Subaru BRZ has dimensions of a classic sports-car. In addition to dimensions, its flared fender lines, flashy five-spoke wheels, sculpted flanks, long hood and arched roof make it look even sportier.
The hood looks even lower when observed from the front, with the low grille just below the bumper and headlights which are widely spread into the fenders. These headlights (and partly the taillights) are perhaps the one thing it has in common with other Subarus. Some of the design innovations, unique to the BRZ, are the blacked-out rear valance, dual exhaust and carved-out sheetmetal. The only part of the exterior that is a bit of an eyesore is side fender vents.
The Premium trim comes standard with 17” alloy wheels, summer tires, a limited-slip rear differential, automatic bi-xenon headlights and LED running lights.
As for the interior of 2015 Subaru BRZ, it’s plain and nicely designed, however a bit bland in comparison to other sporty vehicles.
The front seats are well-shaped, comfortable and back-supportive, therefore convenient for long-distance trips. There is a folding backseat but it’s too tight for adults – it barely has any legroom and headroom. Cargo space is also pretty small (6.9 ft3).
Although it’s kind of a back-to-basics model, it doesn’t lack high-tech features such as navigation, HD radio and Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity. Unfortunately, these features are controlled by a not-so-user-friendly touchscreen interface. The menu includes too many back-and-forth commands, and the virtual buttons are hard to press on the first try, due to their size. Also, there are no audio controls on the steering wheel.
The Premium trim comes standard with with keyless entry, cruise control, air-conditioning, full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, a height-adjustable driver seat and a fold-down rear seatback, 6.1-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a navigation system, voice controls, smartphone app integration (Aha Radio), and an eight-speaker sound system with a CD player, HD radio, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface.
The Limited trim comes with foglamps, a rear spoiler, keyless ignition and entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, simulated suede and leather upholstery, heated front seats and heated mirrors.
Engine and performance
The 2015 BRZ is a rear-wheel drive and uses a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder Boxer engine delivering 200 hp and 151 pound-feet of torque. Premium model is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, while a 6-speed automatic with shift paddles and rev-matched downshifts is optional (except on the Series.Blue, which comes exclusively with manual transmission).
In Edmunds performance testing, the BRZ with a manual transmission accelerated 0-60 mph in 6.8 s. the BRZ with automatic transmission did the same in 7.9 s.
EPA-estimated fuel economy is 28 mpg (25 city/34 highway) with the automatic, and 25 mpg (22 city/30 highway) with the manual.
Price and release date
Starting price of the 2015 Subaru BRZ Premium model is $25,695, the pricing of the Limited model starts at $27,695, whereas the Series.Blue model will cost no less than $29,490. New BRZ 2015 is in stores since the second part of 2014.
