For a while, rumors of a new BMW SUV had been doing rounds on the internet. BMW put the rumors to rest when the automaker finally launched the new compact SUV in it concept form during the 2016 International Auto Show in Paris. Dubbed the “ 2016 BMW X2 Concept ”, the model’s exterior stance is a departure from the current design language used by other members of the ‘X’ family.
The 2016 BMW X2 Concept, compact SUV is targeted to urban dwellers who need to use an SUV as their daily haulers. The model will offer a nice blend of practicability and entertainment. Read along to find out more:
2016 BMW X2 Concept Exterior
The new X2 concept is based on the automaker’s new design language. The model has however borrowed most styling cues from the X1 and X4 SUVs and adds conceptual features, which are not likely to make it into the production version; if they do, it will be in a toned down form.
For a model its size, I must say the concept has a very intimidating front look. The vehicle comes with BMW’s signature twin-kidney grille whose elements fall a little lower than the headlights compared to other BMW models.. The central air intake on the other hand is mounted closer to the ground compared to the outer intakes. BMW has used slim LED headlights that feature blue graphics. An aluminum trim on the grille completes the excellent front design.
Switching gears to the flanks, the X2 features a glasshouse that is lower than what we are used to in the current Beemers. It also features an elongated roofline, which creates an impression that the car is longer than it actually is. Under the beltline, the X2 is very muscular with beefy wheel arches and side skirts that feature a gray trim as well as under-floor extensions. The sides also feature a brushed aluminum trim on the window frames, the unique Hofmeister Kink on the quarter windows and slender side mirrors. The flanks are finished off with a set of 21-inch wheels that add a dose of aggressiveness to the model.
At the rear, the X2 features a slim rear window and a beefed-up horizontal line just above the bumper which give the model a sporty stance like those of hot-hatchbacks .It also features huge exhaust outlets at the corners, an under-floor plate and thin taillights which add to its aggressive stance.
Although most of the cues will be toned down for production purposes, the X2 will still be a very attractive SUV once its production model hits the market.
2016 BMW X2 Concept Interior
BMW did not say anything about the model’s interior styling during the Paris Auto Show. In addition, the model’s windows were heavily tinted so we could not get a sneak peek of the cabin. I think the X2 may have been just an exterior showpiece without any cabin styling whatsoever.
However, cabin information will become available when the model hits the production house, which is not yet confirmed although there has been some spy shots of a model believed to be the X2 undergoing testing in heavy camouflage. When new information about the model’s cabin suffices, we will be the first to inform you. I think that the model’s cabin will adopt the new design we have seen on the latest models of X1 and X3 crossovers.
Engine and performance
Like the interior, the drive-trains that will power the new X2 are still a mystery as of this writing. However, according to rumors, the model will derive its juice from a 2.0 L, turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol mill for the standard models and a 3.0 L, inline-6 mill for top-of-the range models. In addition, there will be a couple of diesel mills.
It is not clear whether the model will feature a RWD platform or a FWD one. Stay tuned, as we will update you on more information once it is available.
Price and release date
Being just a concept, the automaker did not say anything about its price. As for the release date, the model may hit dealerships in the first half of 2018. Before that, BMW may showcase its production version in a couple of International auto shows.
Top rivals of the X2 when it hits the market will be the likes of Audi Q4 and Range Rover Evoque.
