The sedan market is full of many different models to choose from. However, only a handful can match the Dodge Charger’s attitude. Particularly not many American-born sedans get pulse-quickening speed of the Charger.
The Charger made its initial debut in 1966 as a two-door fastback version of the then full-fledged muscle car, the Coronet. The model was later discontinued twice, the most recent being in 1987 and reintroduced in 2006 as a 4-door sedan.
Last year, Dodge introduced the extremely powerful Hellcat version into the lineup and now Dodge has added the Scat Pack version too making the lineup very diverse.
2016 Dodge Charger Exterior
The full-size sedan is offered in a number of trims, they are the base SE and SXT offered in RWD and AWD. Other trims are only offered in AWD, the mid trims R/T, R/T Road & Track and R/T Scat Pack and the top SRT 392 and the SRT Hellcat.
The SE comes standard with automatic headlights and rides on 17-inch alloy wheels. The AWD variant is offered in 19-inch alloy wheels as well as larger brakes. The SXT on the other hand features 18-inch wheels and 19-inch wheels on AWD models. It also adds LED fog lights and heated mirrors.
The SXT also comes with a host of optional packages which include the Plus package which introduces xenon headlights and a rearview camera while the premium package adds 20-inch wheels and automatic wipers. The Rallye package adds 20-inch black alloy wheels and a rear deck lid spoiler while the SXT Super Track Pak features a lower ride height.
The R/T trim gets you all SXT standard equipment and adds a rear spoiler, 20-inch wheels and upgraded brakes. The R/T Road & Track on the other hand adds xenon headlights and upgraded brakes. Both the R/T and SXT are offered with a Black Top Appearance package which adds 20-inch gloss black wheels and a host of other black trim elements.
Things get better with the R/T Scat Pak trim which features a sporty bodywork and upgraded Brembo brakes. Next is the SRT 392 which adds an active exhaust system, xenon headlights and an upgraded suspension.
The top-of-the range SRT Hellcat adds a hood with heat extraction vents in addition to lower trims performance-related upgrades. A sunroof is offered as an option on all trim levels.
2016 Dodge Charger Interior
The 2016 Dodge Charger is oriented towards performance but nonetheless, its cabin is warm and friendly courtesy of a sleek dash and quality materials and some retro-inspired touches such as its T-handle shifter.
The full-size sedan accommodates five passengers providing ample shoulder room. The front is very roomy while the rear is also comfortable though taller passengers will find it somewhat tight. The seats are upholstered in leather with some trims featuring a mix of leather and suede. The Charger features folding rear seatbacks which help expand its 16.5 cubic feet of trunk size.
The SE trim features keyless ignition, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel wrapped in leather, 6-way power driver’s seat, and 60/40 split-folding rear seats. Other features include a dual-zone manual climate control, a 6-speaker sound system with a 5-inch touch-screen interface which integrates Bluetooth phone, dual-charge only USB ports and auxiliary audio inputs.
The SXT adds remote ignition, a dual-zone automatic climate control and heated front seats with an 8-way power driver seat with lumbar support. It also features an 8.0-inch touch-screen display with Uconnect Access and satellite radio. The SXT Plus package adds rear parking sensors and ventilated front seats with a power passenger seat.
It also features a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats, LED lighting and driver memory functions. The Premium package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, front collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, power adjustable pedals and a navigation system. An HD radio and a 10-speaker Beats audio system are also available.
The R/T Road & Track features launch control, a 3-mode stability control and Performance Pages in addition to the SXT Premium package features. The R/T Scat Pack on the other hand adds selectable 3-mode power steering, cloth sport seats and aluminum-trimmed pedals while the SRT 392 adds a flat-bottomed steering wheel and upgraded leather upholstery.
The top-of-the range SRT Hellcat features all model’s performance upgrades and adds an aluminum interior trim, a full-power key fob and a special power-limiting keyless remote.

Engine Specs and Performance
The 2016 Dodge Charger is offered in four engine choices. The SE and SXT models feature the automaker’s Pentastar 3.6 L V-6 good for 292 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The engine is EPA rated at 19 mpg city and 31 mpg on highway for RWD models and 18 mpg city and 27 mpg on highway for AWD models. The same V6 engine produces 300 hp and 264 l4 lb-ft of torque on the Rallye Appearance Group on the SXT. This is courtesy of revised engine-control software, a different exhaust setup and inclusion of a cold air intake.
Moving up to the R/T and R/T Road & Track you will find a 5.7 L Hemi V-8 which puts up 370 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque. This engine has a fuel economy rating of 16 mpg city and 25 mpg on highway.
The R/T Scat Pack and SRT 392 trims on the other hand feature a 6.4 L V-8 Hemi good for 485 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. It is EPA rated at 15 mpg city and 25 mpg on highway. This engine powers the Charger to run from 0-60 mph in around 4.5 seconds
If you still need more juice, you can go for the all potent 6.2 L supercharged V-8 Hemi engine on the SRT Hellcat trim. The engine comes good with a whopping 707 hp and 607 lb –ft of torque. With this power, the Hellcat Charger moves from 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds but it is the least economical engine which EPA rated at 13 mpg city and 22 mpg on highway.
All engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission system that sends power to all wheels except the SE and SXT trims which are also offered in RWD. The Hellcat and the SRT 392 are paired with gigantic Brembo brakes and multi-mode adaptive damping which help manage their huge power.
Price and release date
The 2016 Dodge Charger SE with RWD has an MSRP of $ 28,990 inclusive of a $ 995 destination charge. AWD model attract $ 2,000 extra. The more equipped SXT attracts a $ 30,990 price tag.
On the other hand, the lowest priced Hemi V8 charger is the R/T at $ 34,890, the R/T Scat Pack will set you back $ 40,990 and $ 51,990 for the SRT 392. The range topping SRT Hellcat starts at $ 68, 640 which is a very good bargain as it is hard to finds a model with such power at that price.
For example a similarly equipped and powerful BMW M5 will set you back $ 80 grand or around $ 150 grand for a Porsche Panamera.
