Our spies have spotted the 2016 Mercedes Benz-GLS yet again testing with minimal disguise. The Mercedes has confirmed the model will be released as a 2016 model year vehicle. The automaker has renamed the vehicle GLS replacing its previous name GL in its new naming strategy.
The new model will be positioned alongside the S-Class line of models. This vehicle will spot a number of changes both outside and inside, a fact revealed by our spy shots.
2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS Exterior
According to our spy shots, the new 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS still looks like a longer version of the M-Class. The GLS gets a redesigned front end with a modified twin slat grille with sportier mesh. The grille features a large Mercedes star at the middle. The automaker will use the GLS to introduce their new multi-beam LED headlights.
At the rear, the vehicle will feature a redesigned exhaust system which is hooked to the diffuser. The vehicle will also feature a rear spoiler. The new GLS will also feature a redesigned, lower rear fascia which is sportier as well as redesigned LED taillights.
2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS Interior
The interior will accommodate 7 passengers spread among three row of seats which are made of premium leather. Upper trims will feature heated and ventilated seats as standard; this is offered as an option for the low trim models. The dashboard features an 8-inch touch-screen which seems to float atop; the screen is integrated with an updated COMAND infotainment system.
For safety, the GLS comes with a 360-degree camera, collision prevention assist, active park assist, blind-spot monitoring, cross traffic alert and lane keep assist among other features. We will reveal more features once we get more details from our sources.
Engine Specs and Performance
Though Mercedes released details on its GLE-Class line up power-trains, the auto maker didn’t disclose any details about the GLS. However, since the automaker recently updated GL’s power-plant’s for the 2015 model year, we expect these power-trains to carry over to the GLS with minimal changes if any.
Bearing that in mind, the GLS 350 BlueTEC will feature a 3.5 L Turbo-diesel V-6 unit that produces 240 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque.
The GLS 450 will feature a 3.5 L turbocharged V-6 petrol unit that produces 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.
On the other hand, the GLS 550 will offer a turbocharged V-8 engine that will produce around 429 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.
The top trim GLS63 AMG will be hooked with a 5.5 L turbocharged V8 unit capable of producing 550 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque. All engines will be offered with a 4Matic all-wheel drive as standard. In terms of fuel economy, the diesel unit will deliver an estimated 18 mpg for city and 26 mpg on highway while the top trim AMG will guzzle more fuel at 13 mpg for city and 17 mpg on highway.
Price and release date
We expect the price to remain in the range of the 2015-GL-Class. As such, the base trim model i.e. the GLS 350 BlueTEC should cost around $ 63,600 (MSRP) while the top trim model GL63 AMG will cost around $ 119, 450.
We have heard rumors of a Mercedes Maybach GLS which will come later on. Though the automaker is yet to release official prices and release date, all indications point to the LA Auto Show for its unveiling. We expect sales to follow later in the second half of 2016.
