New 2017 Acura CDX is ready for production and sale on the big Chinese market. A few years back, European and American-based automakers never gave the Asian Auto shows much of their attention. In most cases, many chose to pass them in favor of International Auto shows in the US and Europe. However, the emergence of China as the largest economy in the globe has forced all automakers to rethink about showcasing their models in this show. Of late, China has become a very attractive market for large sedans, crossovers and SUVs. This demand is powered by the large middle class of Chinese consumers. As such, almost all leading automakers had something to display at the just concluded Beijing Auto show. Acura too was present.
However, unlike many other automakers, Acura has been operating in China for the last 10 years. For all that time, the automaker has been shipping vehicles to China but finally has decided it is a time they offered a model manufactured in China specifically for the Chinese market. The design of the 2017 Acura CDX is inspired by the Precision Concept, a sedan that was showcased earlier at the Detroit Auto show. Read along to find out more:
2017 Acura CDX Exterior
The exterior resembles that of the Precision Concept but it also shares a host of Honda HR-V cues like the sweeping roofline. Cues adopted form the Precision Concept include the 5-sided grille with an expanding mesh-type insert that seems to emanate from the gigantic Acura logo at the center. The headlights that flank the grille also resemble those of the Precision Concept. Below the main grille are three openings with two on the sides and the bigger one at the center. The two openings on the extreme sides are wisely integrated with fog lights that help illuminate in dimly lit terrains.
Moving over to the flanks, you will notice a number of creased body lines. They include two lines, one running at the lower part of the doors while the other runs just below the door handles. The sides also feature large wheel openings. Towards the rear, each corner is angled off to eliminate rounded edges and surfaces.
At the rear, the vehicle features taillights similar to those of the Toyota Rav4 but Acura has used a unique lighting design. The rear bumper features a chrome trim. Chrome accenting is also used on side window openings, rocker panels and along the roof-rails.
2017 Acura CDX Interior
The interior of the CDX is still a mystery. However, the bold styling on the outside will also find its way into the cabin. Just like the exterior, the cabin will also be inspired by the Precision Concept. The CUV will accommodate five passengers. While the front seats will be comfortable with sufficient legroom and headroom, the rear will be a bit constrained. The rear will feature a split-folding bench seat to help expand cargo room when needed.
The automaker could even decide to feature “Magic Seats” similar to those on the HR-V. The bottoms of these seats fold upwards to enable hauling of tall items. We will update you on more interior styling when more details become available.
Engine Specs and performance
Under the CDX’s hood lies a turbocharged 1.5 L, 4-cylinder engine which is good for 182 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. I understand that the engine is mounted transversely. In addition, it will be paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission system. The engine will be offered in both front-wheel drive and All-wheel drive.
Information on the engine’s performance and fuel economy is still a mystery. The automaker will release this information when the model nears its market release in July.
Price and release date
As revealed above, the model will be released to the market this July. The base model will start at 250,000 Yuan which is equivalent to $38,000. The top trim will fetch as much as Yuan 300,000 ($46,000). This affordable pricing coupled with its excellent styling will surely tempt many buyers.
When it is released to the market, the 2017 Acura CDX will do battle with a host of models but the most rivalry will come from the Buick Envision.
