Remember the Prologue concept that made its debut in during the 2014 LA Auto Show? Well, our spy photographers have caught up with testing mules that suggest it was a preview of the 2017 Audi A7.
Though the mules were under heavy camouflage, one can tell they are the second-generation Audi A7s. The elegant 5-door Sportback was launched in 2010 and had a mid-cycle refresh in 2014 but now the automaker is set to launch its second generation.
The new 2017 Audi A7 design has been termed as radical which is a first for Audi which is better known for their cabin styling prowess as opposed to outer beauty. Most of Prologue’s design cues will find their way on the A7 as well as the A6 and A8. The vehicle will be based on the 2nd generation MLB chassis.
2017 Audi A7 Exterior
As I said above, the new A7 exterior design is radical. This is good news to Audi lovers. To start with, the vehicle will feature a modified horizontal-shaped single-frame grille. The grille will be flanked by a pair of newly designed LED headlights.
The Upper and lower front bumpers and rear bumpers will be larger and its intakes will also be bigger to allow the vehicle to sip in more cooling air. Its overhangs will remain untouched though. The vehicle will also feature new and unique exterior lines which will be wider and larger. The lines add to its aesthetic beauty.
The rear will feature new LED taillights and redesigned exhaust tips. The vehicle’s proportions and wheel arches are an indication that the vehicle will be an all wheel drive to the discerning eyes. Overall, the vehicle looks very aerodynamic and will be a hit among the young buyers.
2017 Audi A7 Interior
What Audi lacks on the outside, it compensates on the inside, a fact that has enabled it to remain competitive with their traditional competitors (Mercedes and BMW) who produce better looking designs.
The interior offers occupants a relaxing and comfortable environment. Audi has designed the new cabin to offer optimum efficiency without compromising its comfort levels. Fine leather is the standard upholstery here. A state of the art dual-zone climate control will keep cabin temperatures ideal. The seats are excellently designed to offer plenty of legroom to all occupants.
The dashboard will feature a large touch-screen integrated with the latest software and electronics in the industry. Expect Wi-Fi connectivity, USB ports and wireless Bluetooth to come as standard. The vehicle will also be hooked up with an excellent package of safety features and driving aids including bolstered seatbelts, enhanced airbags, traction and stability control, blind spot monitoring, ABS among others.
We will let you know on more specs of the 2017 A7, once we have more information from the automaker or in case our spy photographers get better shots.
Engine Specs and Performance
A good design goes with an excellent engine. Audi will surely hook up the A7 with new and more potent engines. Though there are no official details at the moment, rumor has it that the vehicle will be offered in three engine options, two petrol units and a diesel engine.
The base models will be powered by a supercharged 3.0 L, V-6 capable of 310 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque. This engine will be mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission system. This engine is expected to hit 0-60 mph in less than 5.5 seconds and a top speed capped at 155 mph.
A diesel engine will also be part of the deal. The unit is a 3.0L turbocharged V-6 which comes good with 240 hp. Those looking for more power can opt for the 4.0 L engine twin-turbocharged V-8. This engine is capable of producing 420 hp and can hit 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds which is pretty impressive in this class of luxury cars.
Price and release date
The 2017 A7 is expected to hit the market in the summer of 2016. As of now we don’t have any concrete information about the models price. Due to the new additions, the vehicle is likely to start at a cost slightly above its predecessor. As such expect the base price to start above $ 65,000. Higher trims will attract extra cash.
As you would expect, the names of Mercedes and BMW must appear here. The big threat will come from the Mercedes Benz CLS; however, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe will also have something to say in this contest.
