The new 2017 Ferrari California T is a future dream car of many boys and even a little older boys. When growing up, most of us had the dream cars which we hoped to acquire once we grow up. It is common place to find car posters side by side with celebrity posters in every teenager’s bedroom. Well, in most cases you will find posters of supercars with Ferrari leading the pack. Fast-forward to adulthood and we realize that the supercars are way beyond our reach and all we can do is continue ogling at them on our TV screens or in our neighborhood when a moneyed guy acquires one.
To give more people an opportunity to enjoy the awesome experience of owning a Ferrari, the Italian automaker came up with an affordable Ferrari dubbed the Ferrari California. The first Ferrari California model made its debut in 2009. The model did very well in the market despite critics saying the model did not elicit the true feelings of a Ferrari. The new 2017 model also pays homage to Ferrari California versions of the 1950s and 1960s. Read along for more information:
2017 Ferrari California T Exterior
The exterior of the new 2017 Ferrari California T looks more aggressive than that of the outgoing model. It comes with an angular front grille. The grille is flanked by sharp and slim looking headlights and side air intakes. On the side, the vehicle features sharp lines that start from the side vents and run rearwards; they break briefly to allow the space for the door handles and then stretch rearwards ending close to the rear fenders. This design is adopted from the 250 Testa Rossa.
The rear has not changed much. The automaker has added new air vents behind the rear wheels. Some character lines commence from the vents and stretch under its license plate space. The rear diffuser has also been modified to feature 3 fins. Still on the rear, you will love its quad exhaust pipes which are organized horizontally. The taillight clusters are unchanged as is the rear deck which holds the hard top when it folds. This hardtop takes just 14 seconds to retract; it is operated via the touch of a button. The California T will ride on 5-spoke dark-grey alloy wheels.
If you are a dedicated track racer, you will need to add the Handling Speciale package. On the outside, this package adds a front grille finished in matte Grigio Ferro Met paint which is also done on the rear diffuser to match. The package also adds a matte black exhaust pipes.
In terms of its dimension, the vehicle is 179.92 inches long, 75.19 inches wide and 52.04 inches tall. It weighs 3.582 lbs and has a weight distribution of 47% at the front and 53% at the rear.
2017 Ferrari California T Interior
Sliding inside, you will find an interior almost similar to that of the outgoing model. Ferrari has only refined the cabin to look modern. The refining starts with a new multi-function steering wheel which features an array of control buttons. The flat-bottomed steering wheel also comes with large paddle shifters. The controls of the steering wheel make it look similar to that of an F1 car. The cabin still maintains the 3-pod gauge cluster but the automaker has hooked it up with a modern look and also upgraded its graphics.
The vehicle also comes with a quality infotainment system and a quality HVAC system whose controls are located vertically. For models with the Handling Speciale package, there is a special plaque that indicates that the model is not a regular California T.
The package upgrades the vehicle’s suspension, the engine transmission and the engine’s electronic software. The upgrades result in a faster throttle response and quicker shift times when you select the Sport mode. The package also features a new exhaust system which has been revised. The silencers of the new system increase the exhaust note as the engine revs increase.
Engine Specs and performance
Under the hood of the California T, Ferrari has decided to leave things as they are in the current model. The model still features a 3.9 L twin-turbocharged V-8 engine capable of producing 553 horses@ 7500 rpm and 557 lb-ft of torque from as low as 2750 rpm.
The engine powers the vehicle to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.6 and achieves a top speed of 196 mph. The maximum amount of torque is available on the 7th gear. This thus means the engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch Getrag gearbox. This transmission is the only part of the drive-train that has received the “Handling Speciale Treatment” where it has been tuned to be more aggressive. The system now shifts more aggressively i.e. it’s 30% quicker up and 40% quicker down.
The exhaust system has also been modified. The automaker has added a pair of Helmholtz resonators which have lifted the exhaust sound by 3 decibels. Though the sound has been lifted across the entire rev range, the automaker particularly concentrated on the range between 1500 rpm and 2800 rpm which is the common range when moving through the city traffic.
Price and release date
The 2017 California T will have a starting price of around $ 200,000. Adding the Handling Speciale package will take the price to over $ 210,000. The supercar will hit dealer showrooms in September this year.
