When it debuted, the Mercedes-AMG GT did a hell of a job against the likes of Jaguar F-Type and Porsche 911. Well, if you thought the automaker would stop there you are wrong. Mercedes went two better, the German automaker has followed up the release of the AMG GT S with the range-topping AMG GT R which is set to hunt down the likes of Porsche 911 GT 3 RS and Ferrari 488 GTB. The track-oriented 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT R is the most potent road car the AMG design house in Brooklands has ever made. Mercedes showcased the model at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The model is based on the already awe-inspiring GT S but AMG has added the racing technologies of the GT3 which have been customized for street riding. The GT R beats the GT S in all departments. Its body is by itself captivating. The model showcased at the Goodwood festival wore AMG Green Hell Magno paint to pay homage to the Nurburgring track where it was made.
The vehicle features an underbody spoiler with loaded springs to protect against ground strikes. The front bumper has been revised compared to the one on the GT S. The bumper is integrated with huge air intakes for better cooling of the engine. To further improve cooling, the vehicle features an active air management system with electronically controlled louvers which take just a second to adjust air flow. The louvers only open when the engine needs extra cooling; otherwise, they remain closed to reduce drag.
At the rear, the GT R features stretched rear guards to accommodate its 20-inch wheels. The model also features a double diffuser under the rear bar to add down-force as well as channel heat out of the exhaust silencers. The rear also features a huge carbon-fiber wing which is manually adjustable. Its angle can be adjusted to add or reduce down-force as need be.
I understand that under its underbody engine cover there is an active aerodynamic piece which can lower itself by 40 mm when the model is in Race mode to increase down-force and redirect airflow to the rear diffuser.
Its suspension has been revised where steel pieces have been replaced with forged alloy pieces. On the other hand, its springs can be manually adjusted to alter the ride height. We are told that its active dampers adjust individually according to the speed, terrain or the load the vehicle is carrying.
The model rides on 275/35 ZR19 and 325/30 ZR20 Michelin Cup Sport tires at the front and rear respectively.

Far from what you expect, the cabin has not been stripped down to the bare essentials; rather, the cabin still features the luxurious flare associated with Mercedes models. The vehicle comes with bucket seats which are wrapped in Dinamica microfiber and leather with contrasting yellow seat belts .There are also yellow colored dials to complete the look. One can also opt for the Interior Piano Lacquer trim.
The model is hooked up with AMG Interior Night Package as a standard. A matt black interior trim is offered as an option. The GT R has a high center console and sills but a low-set driving position all meant to improve the driver’s experience behind the wheels.
However, handling is where the model excels most. AMG has hooked up the GT R with active 4-wheel steering that also features steering actuators in place of rear control arms. This helps quicken the model’s handling in speeds above 60 mph; beyond this speed, all wheels align in the same direction which in turn stretches the wheelbase to improve stability and enhance its handling.
The model also features the GT3 racer’s 9-stage traction control system which enables the driver to specify the level of control he/she requires through a rotary knob mounted on the center console.
Engine Specs and performance
The 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT R will be powered by the same engine as the GT and GT S. This is the 4.0 L, V-8 engine. On the base GT, this engine produces 456 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque and 503 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque on the GT S. On the GT R, the engine has been tweaked for a whole 577 hp and though torque figures are not yet out, I believe it will exceed 500 lb-ft.
This extra “juice” enables the GT R to hit 60 mph from standstill in 3.5 seconds compared to the GT’s 3.9 seconds and GT S’s 3.7 seconds over the same run. The automaker has hiked its top speed to 198 mph, a mere 5 mph increase from the GT S to differentiate the model as the top dog of the lineup.
Mercedes has not uttered any words concerning the GT R’s price or actual on sale date. However, the model will be showcased at the Goodwood Festival of Speed which will be held on 24th June. As for the price, the model is likely to fetch around $ 140,000. We will convey exact prices when the automaker releases more information.
