With every automaker focused on the future with futuristic designs and technologies not yet feasible today, Mercedes decided to go way back and revive one of their past machines.
It has been 44 years since Mercedes discontinued the convertible version of the S lineup of coupes which is the automaker’s largest. After what seemed like an eternity, the automaker is set to bring the 4-seater convertible that used to roam the streets in the 50s back to the limelight.
Boy, the automaker is bent on making up for the cabriolets lost time and intends to get to the top crushing any model on its way. The model made its debut at this year’s Frankfurt Auto Show. 2017 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet will be offered in two versions i.e. AMG S63 4MATIC Cabriolet and Mercedes S550 Cabriolet.
2017 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet Exterior
The new 2017 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet is based on the same platform as the S-Class Coupe. At the front, the cabriolet will feature extended headlights that are integrated with LED daytime running lights. These lights flank a large hexagonal grille and a stylishly carved hood. At the rear, you will find rectangular-shaped LED taillights integrated to a chrome trimmed bar.
Except for the roof top, the cabriolet and the S-Class coupe appear almost identical. The cabriolet features a fabric roof top which opens and closes at a push of a button up to speeds of 37 mph. The roof top opens and closes in just 20 seconds. The vehicle is availed in four colors which are gray, black, dark blue and red.
2017 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet Interior
The interior is luxurious, stylish and relaxed. The cabin features a host of innovative technologies including moving the sliding roof via the press of a button. The cabin features premium materials and the latest technology in the industry so as to enable the car to give the likes of Ashton Martin Vanquish and Maserati GranTurismo convertible a run for their money.
The interior just like the exterior is similar to the coupe. The only interior difference is the new intelligent air conditioning system. The system is referred to as thermo-tronic and ensures perfect air conditions whether the roof is up or down. Leather trim is found on almost all surfaces with a Silver Shadow accentuation. The coupe has a 2+2 seating layout with deeply bolstered and sculptured rear seats.
The dash features dual-TFT displays that house the gauge cluster and the navigation, entertainment and climate control features. They are controlled by an interface on the center console that has a touchpad for gesture-based commands and handwritten inputs. Other standard features include LED interior and exterior lighting, heated seats, a rearview camera, a Burmester AM/FM/CD/SiriusXM audio system, power rear window, Bluetooth connectivity, adaptive high beam and a panorama roof. For buyers looking for more, they can opt for the available options and packages.
For safety, Mercedes is always at the fore-front. The vehicle comes with ABS and electronic stability control as standard. The automaker also features a full package of driving aids as standard to higher trims and as part of the Driver Assistance Package to lower trim models.
Engine Specs and Performance
2017 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet will be offered in two models each with a different engine.
