New 2017 Opel Meriva which sells in the United Kingdom as Vauxhall Meriva is an MPV that has managed to create a fan following among buyers looking for reliable and economic family car.
The car was first launched in 2002 as a mini-MPV which was later transformed to a compact MPV in 2010. Of late, the model’s sales have been falling consistently. Rumor has it that sales had gone down by around 27% in Europe last year alone. On the other hand, SUV and crossover sales are increasing by large margins in Europe. It is for this reason that Opel has decided to redesign the second generation of the MPV with a more cross-over like platform. Read along for more:
2017 Opel Meriva Exterior
The new Opel Meriva 2017 will be based on a new platform known as the SCCS platform. Though there is still scanty information about this vehicle, from the spy shots we have captured of the model under camouflage we can tell the following: To start with, it will have a new grille.
The grille will be flanked by new headlights with LED technology. The front bumper looks modified; the bumper will also be integrated with LED fog lights. On the sides, its back-hinged doors will be certainly replaced by ones that are more conventional.
At the rear, the taillights are also revised and feature LED lighting. Its bumper is also slightly modified. The 5-door MPV will ride on a set of 18-inch alloy wheels.
2017 Opel Meriva Interior
Sliding inside, you will meet a restyled cabin that offers more convenience and comfort to passengers. The Meriva will accommodate five passengers comfortably. Seats are upholstered in a quality cloth. Due to the new platform, passengers will have increased head and legroom. The vehicle’s cargo space is also set to expand.
The model will also feature the automaker’s IntelliLink infotainment system similar to the one on Opel Astra and Corsa. This system integrates a 7.0-inch color touch-screen mounted at the center console. We will inform you of more specs once we get more details.
Engine Specs and performance
The 2017 Opel Meriva will be offered in both petrol and diesel engine options. Though exact information is not out, we understand that the following drive-trains are likely. The first engine will be a 1.4 L, 4-cylinder petrol engine which is capable of producing 99 hp and 96 lb-ft of torque. This engine will be tuned differently to offer more power. The tweaked version will deliver 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque.
Moving over to diesel engines, the first mill will be a 1.3 L, 4-cylinder engine capable of 94 hp and 133 lb-ft of torque. The second diesel mill is a 1.7 L CDTI engine good for 128 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. The most potent engine will be a 1.6 L diesel engine with 134 hp and a whopping 320 lb-ft of torque.
The engines will be paired to either a 5- or 6-speed manual gearbox; for those who prefer doing less work when driving, a 6-speed automatic transmission system is available. All models will feature front wheel drive. Information on fuel economy and acceleration will be availed later on but the automaker says enthusiasts should expect improved performance and economy figures for the entire Meriva lineup.
Price and release date
Opel has not released details on the official prices of the Opel Meriva 2017. The model is however expected to arrive in dealer showrooms in first half of 2017. The base model will start at around $ 20,500 which is equivalent to €16,000 in Europe.
The 2017 Opel Meriva will face competition from Kia Carens, Toyota Innova and Mitsubishi Grandis among others.
