The current Wrangler known as the JK is the best-selling Jeep ever all over the globe. The current model has been around since 2007 and has been undergoing mild updates to keep it modern. This model has sold over 200,000 units across the world which even exceeded the automakers target by a whopping 27,000 units. Finally, the automaker is set to offer a new 2018 Jeep Wrangler with various modern improvements but still maintain the same Jeep tradition.
The designers will have to work in overdrive to achieve this since buyers will look for more comfort and technologies but with the same simple and masculine look which sets the Wrangler apart from any other car in the market. With this in mind, expect the model to retain its signature boxy look and body-on-frame design.
We understand that the model will be released to the market sometime next year as a 2018 model vehicle. A test mule of this model was captured around Detroit though under heavy camouflage. Reports from the company indicate that the new model will be aluminum-intensive to improve its performance and fuel economy.
The head of design at Jeep, Mark Allen also confirmed that the 2018 Wrangler will go one better; it will have a crew cab pickup truck body variant to appeal to a wider group of buyers.
2018 Jeep Wrangler Exterior
From the testing mule, we can see that the new-generation Wrangler has a hard top but it looks as if it has removable soft panels that are set on a substructure. At the front, the Jeep Wrangler seems to have a windshield that is tilted while its new grille seems to bend slightly near the top. I believe its headlights will use LED technology.
At the rear, the vehicle will have a full folding back glass. Unlike the current models where the tailgate swings sideways to allow the glass to open upwards, the glass will be pinned to the roof and open all the way. The tailgate design will also be modified but the bumpers and wheel bolt patterns won’t be touched. We will be able to give you more insight to its exterior styling once we capture a model without much camouflage.
2018 Jeep Wrangler Interior
Our photographers were unable to get close to the testing mule to look at the inside. However, even if they did, the Wrangler was under heavy camouflage they couldn’t have captured much. In addition, since the model is still a long way from production, it could be that Jeep has not finalized with its interior.
Though there will be a number of new changes to include modern technologies, the designers must maintain its traditionally minimalistic cabin with analogue knobs and buttons. For improved connectivity, rumor has it that the automaker will replace the outdated Uconnect system with a 5.0-inch Uconnect system for base trim models and the FCA’s sourced 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system for the top trims. The 8.4-inch Uconnect system should offer Bluetooth connectivity, navigation and satellite radio as well as some apps as standard.
The model will accommodate five passengers. Its seats will likely feature tight-weave cloth upholstery as standard and leather on top trims. Just like models before it, the new Wrangler’s carpets and rubber grommets will be easily removable for easier cleaning.
Engine Specs and Performance
As of now, little is known about the possible engines that will drive the new Wrangler. All we have are rumors going around of a V-6 and a diesel engine. Some rumors are even suggesting that there will be a hybrid variant.
According to these rumors, there will be a Pentastar V-6 engine with a displacement of 3.6 liters. This engine will be tweaked to produce around 300 horses and 270 lb-ft of torque. The engine will be paired to a new 8-speed ZF transmission system which will replace the current 5-speed automatic system. Most of the Jeep enthusiasts are adults over 40 years who are yet to accept automatic transmissions in their vehicles leave alone the rising trend of autonomous vehicles. As such, to satisfy them, the automaker will still offer a 6-speed manual gearbox.
There will also be a diesel engine. However, it is not clear if the engine will attain the stringent fuel emission standards in the U.S: As such, it could only be offered in Europe. The diesel unit being rumored is a turbodiesel 3.0 L, EcoDiesel engine which will be adopted from the Ram 1500. Actually, the automaker is keeping tabs on the Ram 1500 sales in the U.S. to see whether there is a good enough market for diesel vehicles before making a decision whether to offer a diesel powered wrangler in the U.S.
This engine is expected to produce around 240 hp and over 400 lb-ft of torque. This engine will also be mated to ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, a 6-speed manual gearbox will most likely be offered as an option. These transmission systems will send power to all 4 wheels.
Price and release date
It is hard to predict when the 2018 Jeep Wrangler will hit dealerships but I am sure it is sometime next year. The automaker could even showcase the vehicle in a couple of International Auto Shows before it hits dealerships. Regarding its price, actual details will be available close to its on-sale date next year.
However, expect a price hike. The base 2-door Wrangler will start at around $ 25,500 compared to the current model’s $ 23,895 starting price. The Limited trim on the other hand could start at around $ 33,000. Ticking all options for your Wrangler will end up costing you as over $ 50,000.
Due to its unique exterior and interior styling, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is in a class of its own. However, Ford has been monitoring the increase in sales of the Wrangler with an interest. Insider reports from the Blue Oval automaker allege that the automaker is planning to release a new Ford Bronco to rival the Wrangler.
