We have in possession spy shots of the third generation 2018 Kia Ceed hatchback undergoing testing though under heavy camouflage. The automaker has decided to hook up the model with more comprehensive changes since the second generation has been on sale since 2012. Having only made slight changes on the model last year, the automaker has now decided to revise the model more significantly. Read along to find out what Kia has in store for its “Ceed” lovers:
2018 Kia Ceed Exterior
From the prototype, it is clear that the new hatchback will be slightly larger than the outgoing model. Not much could be made from the prototype as it was under heavy camouflage. However, the front fascia looks to be sportier. The grille looks larger while sharper and sleeker headlights flank it. Both the headlights and taillights will use LED technology. The bumper will likely be more aggressive.
On the sides, the model features slightly longer rear windows and revised side windows. The side profile now looks identical to that of its sister, the 2017 Hyundai i30. From the photos of the prototype, we can tell that the 2018 Kia Ceed will likely ride on 15-inch steel wheels with an option for 16-inch rollers.
At the rear, the five-door hatchback features revised taillights while the fascia has been also modified to look wider. A panoramic sunroof is offered as a standard feature. Going by the i30’s design, the Ceed will likely lose 62 pounds but become more rigid (22%) compared to the current model.
2018 Kia Ceed Interior
Due to the heavy camouflage, we could not tell what lies inside. However, due to its larger body, the cabin will be more spacious. Therefore, expect a better headroom and legroom for the rear passengers. The cockpit will also receive a host of new features. The cabin will also be upholstered in quality materials. Latest technologies will certainly feature. Safety will also be well taken care of and expect the model to feature an array of driver assist systems.
Engine and performance
According to credible reports, the new Kia Ceed will feature same engines as the 2017 Hyundai i30. The first engine on the lineup is a naturally aspirated 1.4 L, mill that produces 98 hp and 99 lb-ft of torque. Next up is a 1.0 L, 3-cylinder engine good for 118 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque. The third mill is a 1.4 L, 4-cylinder unit that produces 138 hp and 179 lb-ft of torque.
Diesel lovers are not left out. The automaker offers a 1.4 L, 4-cylinder power-plant that is offered in three flavors. The engine produces 94 hp, 109 hp or 134 hp. The automaker is yet to release information about the engines torque. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard but there will be an option for a 7-speed automatic system. These systems will channel power to the rear wheels.
Price and release date
Since the model is still a long way from its on-sale debut, it is too early to talk about it price. However, I expect the hatchback to attract a price tag of around $20,000. Kia may showcase the model at an international auto show in the last quarter of 2017 with sales commencing in the first quarter of 2018.
