Behold the 2018 Kia Proceed Concept, a Kia like none you have ever seen before. The model is the most stunning station wagon I have seen in recent times. The model which the automaker says previews the Kia Cee’d looks nothing like the latter. The Proceed concept flaunts a shooting brake body profile; the automaker says they arrived at the decision to use this body style due to the slowing demand for hot hatches in the European market. Kia is of the view that the market needs something exciting, a ‘Cee’d shooting brake’. If you are in U.S.A., don’t start getting excited as the model is not sold in North America.
2018 Kia Proceed Concept Exterior
I must admit that this is the most beautiful Kia I have ever seen. The model represents Kia’s idea of what a shooting brake should look like and I am all into this idea. Although the front fascia looks familiar to current Kia models, it is on a level of its own in terms of beauty. The model’s tiger-nose grille looks slim at the center while the bumper integrates sharp air intakes. The headlights, however, look much familiar to those of current Kia models.
The flanks are also new; the design features a rakish roofline and a striking window frame that flows rearwards as if to imitate the roofline. The concept also features hidden door handles while its side skirts are deeply sculpted and finished in a black paint. Unlike the 2-door Kia Cee’d, the Proceed concept has four doors. The model does not have B-pillars and its C-pillars are replaced with Shark blade-like elements. To cap the side look are 6-spoke, 20-inch aluminum rollers in a 2-tone finish.
The same treatment continues at the rear where there is a beefed-up bumper that integrates false vents. There is also a thin light bar that connects both fenders. The rear window is very thin. The automaker also offers a “Lumiline” effect which is actually an illumination of the model’s glasshouse that welcomes the driver as he/she approaches the vehicle; it also serves to highlight the model’s shooting brake profile. To complete the exterior styling is a customized Lava Red paintwork.
The interior looks top-notch; it can rival some German-made luxury models. Like the exterior, the dash features the attractive Lava Red finish. To get out the rich look of the dash, the automaker has applied over 90 coats of the Lava Red paint. The dash is however uncluttered with the passenger’s side devoid of any trim or detailing. The center screen is thin and very long; it is also skewed towards the driver to ensure the driver does not need to let his eyes off the road to take a peek at the screen.
The center console is short and also wears the Lava Red finish but it is contrasted with knurled aluminum buttons. Supporting the center console is a carbon-fiber structure that stretches from one side to the other. The instrument cluster, on the other hand, features two screens that mimic analog dials. According to the automaker, the background of the screens change depending on the driving mode selected. The Proceed features 3 modes, when on the GT mode, the background is Lava Red, selecting Eco sees the background turn Forrest Green and Ghost White when you select the Autonomous mode.
There is also a flat-bottomed, 2-spoke steering wheel with chrome detailing.
The seats are upholstered in elastane fabric which was fitted by hand for a rippled effect. The backrests of the seats are supported by metal skeletons, a design borrowed from racecars. Door panels also look simple and are upholstered in the same fabric that is however painted solid black close to the window line and red close to the foot-wells.
Engine and performance
Kia did not say what powers the concept; it is also difficult to predict the engine under its hood considering the model it previews i.e. Kia Cee’d is powered by an array of engines. Considering the concept seems to preview the performance-oriented Cee’d GT, it could likely be carrying a turbocharged 1.6 L mill good for 201 hp.
Price and release date
Being a concept there are no price or release date details to talk about; anyways, this thing looks stunning. Kia is really doing great with its design language and I really hope the model hits production the way it is. However, knowing automakers, the model will get most of its features toned down. Nonetheless, I hope the actual production model (Kia Cee’d) won’t lose the kind of appeal this concept has created.
