McLaren always strives to improve its models compared to their predecessors. The automaker is of the opinion that driving is a pursuit that should be improved every time. To keep true to their views, the automaker has released the second generation of their supercar which is a massive improvement compared with the first generation 650S supercar. The second-generation model dubbed the 2018 McLaren 720S looks better, feels smoother and is quicker than the 650S.
2018 McLaren 720S Exterior
The 2018 McLaren 720S has a revolutionary design compared with the 650S. The 720S, however, retains the outgoing model’s proportions. At the front, the new 720S features a more angular look as its fenders stretch into the nose and trunk lid. Unlike in the outgoing model where headlights were integrated into the fenders, in the new model, they are mounted much lower at the corners. The headlights no longer integrate DRLs as the latter are offered as standalone units.
While the front splitter still wears a carbon-fiber finish, the bumper features the body-color.
At the rear, the model has a rather flatter fascia. Thin LED strips have replaced the previous taillights. The horizontal slat grille has also been discarded. The automaker also opted for round-shaped exhaust tips in place of the outgoing model’s trapezoidal units. A new aerodynamic unit that sees the spoiler lift up to create a wing-like element via the touch of a button has replaced the rear wing on the outgoing model. The side fenders feature small vents for cooling purposes as the large vent on the rear fenders was eliminated. The model’s dihedral doors are cleverly designed to channel cooling air to the engine.
Overall, the model’s profile looks similar to that of the 650S; however, its beltline is lower. The cabin is also narrower which creates an impression that its fenders are wider.
Interior
Despite being a street legal car, the cabin says otherwise as its design is based on that of racecars. The designers have separated the driver’s compartment from the rest of the cabin via a slim center stack that leans towards the driver’s side. The vertical screen retains all the necessary knobs and buttons. The 8.0-inch screen offers an integrated approach to sharing information as it allows multiple apps to run simultaneously as well as provide access to navigation controls, audio and other media. It is also very easy to use.
The automaker has also equipped the model with an innovative folding instrument cluster christened the “Folding Drive Display”. The display rotates around to show different information. In an upright position, it shows comprehensive information about the vehicle but it can rotate to show a Slim Display Model that is customized for track racing.
Being a street-focused supercar, the 720S features an array of luxury features. Aluminum and leather are used unsparingly. The cabin also features carbon-fiber and Alcantara trims. An attractive contrast stitching holds up the upholstery together. In general, the cabin has a stunning fit, a result of excellent British craftsmanship.
Buyers can choose either a black interior trim or a mix of black and Scoria Grey. However, buyers can request their interiors to be customized from the automaker’s Special Operations department.
Engine and performance
Under the hood, McLaren has decided it is time to the supercar got a new mill. The previous 3.8 L, the twin-turbocharged V-8 engine has been replaced with a twin-turbocharged 4.0 L, V-8 engine that produces 710 hp (720 PS as the nametag suggests) and 568 lb-ft of torque. During the launch, the automaker did not give specific performance details but said the model will need less than 3 seconds to accelerate from 0-62 mph. The 720S will also have a higher top speed at 212 mph from the outgoing model’s 207 mph. The car needs 4.6 seconds to stop from a speed of 124 mph. The supercar has a fuel consumption of 10.7 liters/km.
To enhance its performance and handling, McLaren used a new carbon fiber tub and a new upper structure dubbed the “McLaren Monocage II”. As a result, the structure is very strong and rigid, yet lightweight. The chassis, on the other hand, features a combination of aluminum alloys. Other improvements include a new generation of the Proactive Chassis Control, new suspension as well as an electro-hydraulic steering for better balance, grip and performance.
Price and release date
In Europe, McLaren announced that the new 720S will have a starting price of £208,600, representing a £13,350 premium over the 650S. The automaker did not mention anything about the U.S. prices but expect around $290,000 considering the 650S had a price of $265,000. The automaker is already accepting orders for the second-generation supercar.
